Very interesting. So they have been notified, but nothing has changed. They must really want ppl to use it, lol. Ai I dunno its really coming in handy to do my research and stuff. Actually using it to upload this post now,hehe.

I think MTN should be asked if it is OK. I would like to use it (not that I know how) but I am not going to.
 
A mate of mine showed me how this works, it definitely does work. Its a small app that tunnels all your data through a proxy. All they do is point it to a certain open proxy which is only open when you are connected using an MTN sim card.
I think its just a result of a poor setup and useless network engineers on MTN's side.

I wouldnt use it though, its not worth the amount of trouble you can get yourself into to download some useless stuff that you will have forgotten in 3 months anyway.

Thing is, they'd need to be able to show you what you did wrong? Just using a proxy isn't illegal.
 
Ive seen this happen, one guy I know downloaded over a terrabyte ^_^

It seems these towers have a lot of juice in them..


The old MTN loophole was the bomb. Til they fixed it, and now it seems to be working again. But I don't care coz i have adsl and I only play d2 so meh..


P.S. It is as Rocket Boy said, its such a pain in the arse to set it up.. using adsl is such a TREAT compared with this "method"

You are quite correct its not illegal to use a proxy, it is however illegal to use data on a charged for network when you are not paying for it. Its an exploit and its not legal.

Could you provide me with a reference to the law on this that applies to SA?
 
Its not Illegal, until a judge rules that it was.. This is called justice.

No, I couldnt be bothered to find one. But im sure you could use one of their network abuse clauses or one of the SA laws that relates to that.
So you are assuming that if you downloaded a few TB of stuff on it and were caught that you could say to MTN " sorry buggers it was your fault for not finding this loophoole, I found it so I exploited it lulz" and that they would happily take the loss that data was worth?
I seriously doubt that would be the case. Lets assume its 1000gb of data at the standard rate of R2/mb. So that 1000x 1024 = 1024000mb. 1024000mb x R2/mb = R2048000. So R2048000 should be the amount of income they received for what was used on their network. Instead they received about R0.15 for auth and overheads.

Honestly do you think they would laugh it off and take the loss?
 
I envy those who have the app, but honestly if I was you I would keep quiet about it, firstly you said there a few ppl using it, and now you post this topic and I'm sure more people have gotten it.

MTN aint a small company, when you use and abuse you'll get whats coming to you eventually.

This is how i look at it.

If you on prepaid, you pay and then you use.

If your simcard is not registered then i say enjoy the free internet. Change your username on this forum as often as possible.

If you are ever approached by the cops or MTN then flush the sim down the loo.
Oh one more thing if they want to investigate you. Format your hard drive.

The law states you are innocent till proven guilty. Even if you go to court alone. The judge will ask mtn to prove their case. No sim , no hard drive data , no mybb linkups. You safe.
Where's the proof.

You are correct that its innocent until proven guilty.
Here is what they will do:
They will first look at the cell number that was used. Then they will check to see which IMEI number was used with it. So that means they will have your cellular modem details. They will then check to see which other sim cards have been used in that modem at some stage and which towers it had lock from and the proximity position.
So if at any stage you had a contract card in the device you are already poked. If not your geographic position makes it plausible enough.
So aside from the numerous other checks that they can and will do, the only way you could keep yourself relatively anonymous would be to use it from a laptop you dont care about losing with a modem you have never used with anything other than the un-rica'd prepaid sim and you also dont mind losing the modem. Then you have to drive to some place to use it other than at your home address. You would also have to avoid normal web browsing that involves user logins as those can easily be recorded by their proxy and they could be traced back to your ISP who could recall where the radius auth request came from and then trace you back to that.

What im saying is that its too much effort to go through to download some illegal stuff and you are not as untraceable as you think you are.
 
If you do get caught and wind up in jail you could always "pull a sheik"-[I coined it first].

Seriously though im prepared to let my wife's, gran come live with us until she passes on only because she needs her landline and im so bandwidth starved i want ASDL.

If MTN was a fictional video game character it would be Sephiroth from FF7, and the perpetrator would be Aerith without any level ups.

Some geek was selling it for R800.00 on this forum. He sent me a trial version that is very slow. Works with OPERA , DNS and IPN stuff that he sends you.
