Free networks gain ground

I wonder how years we are away from making a VOIP call from CT to GP purely over a WUG type setup? That would be quite a newsworthy event, if possible... Would be great publicity for this kind of cooperative networking.

curvature of the earth, obstacles in the way, and distance of link would all seem a bit too much for a GP->CT link. I'm not denying the possibility of it, but it would HAVE to span over many nodes/hops and then it doesnt seem practical anymore when you could make the link over wire instead. pity, though =)

Definitely would have to be multi-hop (unless HF spectrum is deregulated, which is not likely), maybe along N3/N2 rather than N1 . Some kind members would have to donate equipment/resources to bridge several large gaps.

I just love the thought of the impact the headline could make on the public. Would maybe start instigating some scrambling by the telcos to price more realistically.

I wonder about the possibility of the Shuttleworth's etc of the world sponsoring an "X Prize" competition for the longest VOIP call made over a private WAN in S.A.?

Quite true. We do actually all have this idea in mind, and if we can find all the right spots, we will most likely be doing it :-)

Also, BFNWUG and PEWUG recently started gaining momentum, so any of the MyADSL-dwelling folks who are from around there who are interested should perhaps go check it out.

Even if I could do it, another barrier is the lack of a basic FAQ explaining what it's all about. I'm sure more people would get on board if they knew more about it.

What is "WUG"?
A visit to the WUG Website or just reading this thread should have given you enough clues what a WUG is about.


WUG - Stands for Wireless User Group. Wug.za.net is a South African community based site geared toward a community based wireless network world.

In real terms the WUG is a area-wide wireless LAN community. They share stuff, play games against each other and loads of other stuff as you would with a normal LAN, they just use a wireless network to do it over greater ranges than a LAN would be able to reach. One of the people from a WUG would be able to expand on this in more detail.
