Free Telkom ADSL speed upgrades

Fantastic news Telkom, really making strides!

Too bad we are still waiting for Telkom to install lines at my new complex. 3 months in and they are unwilling to install unless 65% of residents sign up :<

This is impossible due to the nature of their copper network.
This is a telephone network that has had ADSL added to it .
Short of renewing all the copper cables this will not and cant happen.
 
Great stuff, now Telkom seeing as you've shortened the local loop length supposedly, can those of us that have been close enough to the exchanges to get 24Mb finally get 16Mb or 20Mb?

Conceptually it's great, but some of us have had to go through previous well-meaning upgrades that have made things in some ways worse for a time. For me, the switch to the uncapped model almost immediately resulted in 16 months of progressively worsening exchange congestion in my area that made the internet useless for anything latency sensitive for large portions of the day.

The upgrade here is a little weird because I thought the number of ADSL users who were technically capable of receiving 10Mbps ADSL were in the minority, so there are many people in my situation who pay for "up to 4Mbps" now and are interested in what this means for them.

The scenarios I can think of are:

a) If you're in a 4Mbps only area, do the existing pricing structures stay in place till they get around to upgrading you whenever that is? i.e. the options remain 1/2/4 Mbps indefinitely if you're on an old exchange.

b) Is it part of Telkom's network plan to do a massive "flick of the switch" over the next 6 months that will result in loads of us 4Mbps guys getting onto 10Mbps, and so the question becomes irrelevant.

c) If they don't upgrade and we're in a 4Mbps-only area would we just end up being dropped down to the lower price package and save some money.
 
Initially I was "meh" because even though I was on 8 meg at one point, I had to downgrade to 4 meg to ensure the line was stable.

Then I realised I can downgrade my package, get the same speed I'm getting now, and save money! Yay!

it is a price drop....lets say you have a 2MB line, so you'll be upgraded to a 4MB line for the same price.
then you call telkom to downgrade your line and pay less.....

Initially I was "yay" because even though i was paying for a 4meg my line could sync at 7 meg at one point, then Telkom involuntarily downgraded my line to 2meg after a cable break and even then it was only stable some of the time.

Now I realised I can downgrade my package, still only get 2meg max, but save money! Whoop-de-doo!
