I want to share how I got some free tv.

I used to stream everything from my pc using kodi via HDMI cable(I am stuck with a dumb tv). It worked pretty well when my pc was close to my tv.

So a week ago I moved into a loft apartment and my pc is now upstairs. So the HDMI cable did not reach and I did not want to get a longer cable because who wants a cable laying around?

I considered getting a raspberry pi 2 B with wifi media kit and install linux with kodi on it. This would cost R1500 incl delivery. I looked for a cheaper option and found this little beauty. The Minix noe G4. I have an account at a computer supplier so it only cost me R570.

http://www.minix.us/products/NEOG4.html

With this I installed kodi and the following 3 add ons :
1) Phoenix
2) Sports devil
3) Genisis

You can find these ad ons by googling it.

Anyway, with 2meg and higher connection I can stream all the sport I like using Sports devil, all the movies and series out there with Genisis and Phoenix.

So there is my free tv story.

or even better just install TVMC on the device. It preconfigures all the add ons

using too many add ons really messes with your set-up sometimes.

I have sportsdevil and genesis. I dont see the point in Phonix, genisis handles it all IMHO

Thanks Terence!

Can you run DSTV NOW on it? (I have access to account)

NETFLIX?
HULUPLUS?
BBC iplayer?
Crackle?

But here's the catch. how do u control the android stick from your couch?
And then the kicker can't you just install all that Kodi stuff on your android phone and ChromeCast it to your TV... how nice would that be?

I have not tested with these services yet. Still need to figure out a way around with country restriction with this device for netflix.
No, I do not get DSTV with it. But I have installed the Showtime app from multichoice. Still need to test that as well.

You get an infrared remote with Minix Neo G4. eg. http://androidpc.es/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/G4-box.jpg
But even with the remote I use a wifi keyboard and mouse.

I have a windows phone. No Kodi for windows phone.

With Chromecast you stream to the device. The Minix android pc now works as a dedicated media center.

I'm not sure where you went wrong but I have a slight suspicion...
Here's my solution, Chromecast and that's it.

Netflix, Hulu, Itv, dodgy streams, BBC, Comedy Central, Plex, Stream from any pc in the house(anyone acting like a dedicated media centre), ag you name it, if it's a video it can be streamed to chromecast even the naughty ones from that free site.

Maybe add Unotelly to erase those pesky borders

There is a VPN plugin for Kodi called Datho VPN. Works great, even the free access.

Thanks again Terence!

I get all those apps except DSTV NOW/KODI running on my ps3...might be time for an upgrade. ;)

Why bother with netflix, hulu or even DSTV?

not trolling here, its 100% everything you need. with Genesis you can watch EVERYTHING that you could via the other places. and then some actually.
with sportsdevil you get the part that DSTV would give you. live sport. and yes you can watch Currie cup, I think, I am not that big on rugby so I cant confirm.

as for the controls, I have a keyboard and mouse set up to my mini PC that is connected to my TV via HDMI.

But some of us want to support the content creators you know so that they can make more Game of Thrones or Dare Devil for example.

Sportsdevil did provide some Currie Cup games, but some streams would disappear after the first 20minutes.
The Rugby World Cup is on ITV via FilmOn.TV (FTV Guide as TV Guide).

so pay for the subscription. KODI is still a better way to watch.

Okay this is going to sound stupid, but Chromecast..... something that always confused me... does it stream content from the PC or from the phone? I had some impression that it streams what's on your phone. If it can handle my PC's Plex server then it suddenly sounds much more attractive, especially the new one for $35.

It gets the "link" from your phone then stream from the server directly.

So, with Plex for example, you use the Plex app on your phone and cast a movie to your TV. The CC will then get the link from your phone and then using the link, stream from your Plex server.

You only need your phone initially to give the CC the link.

Boss! I'm totally getting one.

The Chromecast is proper awesome man.

I use Plex as well, Chromecast+Plex =

Yep now it's just a waiting game for me to see when they get CC v2 in the country. They have refurbed v1 at Orange store for R419 but you know... it's v1
