Hey guys,

someone has asked me to fix her computer. I am not really sure what the prob is though. When I turn the PC on, everything seems fine, it shows the Award Bios screen and freezes. Hitting del to enter the Bios doesn't work, I have disconnected the DVD rom (which might be faulty she said), took out the HDD and tested the ram. Still the same prob. What do you guys think is broken? Any ideas?

Your stroke is too short and you are getting premature ignition. :D

Seriously it sounds like it could be the BIOS. Try resetting the BIOS via the MB jumper.

I know you said it's working with onboard but have you tried other RAM in it?

Surely if it was RAM you would at least get the POST beeps. Sounds like it's either the CPU or the mobo. But give the RAM a change and see. Certainly no harm in trying. Try remove everything and then reseat it all again, sometimes that works too. :o

Ah ok, with the past 2 ASUS boards i've had, the express gate would cause it to freeze during post

Does the mobo have a speaker onboard? If not try connecting one to it and listen for beeps

Sounds like RAM or drives to me. It's waiting for something.
Go into BIOS and start disabling integrated devices, even the drive controllers. See where it goes.

How far does it get with the RAM out?

I cant get into the Bios, it freezes before I can. The ram is fully working (beeps when the ram is out). I did reset the Bios by taking the battery out, no luck. I don't think its the HDD, Disc drive, PSU nor the Ram, but I might be wrong. If it is the mobo, would it even show anything on the screen (it does, bios screen)? I am not sure about the CPU...

Try a proper BIOS reset. Pop the battery out, put the jumper on and press the power button for a good few seconds (10-20). Put battery back in and see.

Not sure if you're going to find this problem without having a spare CPU, motherboard and RAM on hand. It all depends really on how cute this lady is. :)
