Hi,

Just a warning to all explorers who seek faster ways to gather information.

I've upgraded to Frogfoot's 1Gbps (via Afrihost) this month (June 2022). I've been noticing connection timeouts in my Teams meetings, massive latency and packet loss in games and buffering on my smartspeakers. After doing a speedtest... just take a look:

I'm paying +-R1500 pm for a 1.5Mbps connection!

Why is your 1Gbps actually 1Mbps, Frogfoot??

Dude I've never seen 1Gbps real world performance on my line. Also FF.

Speedtest will show me 940 up and down (app only btw) and that's only because Afrihost prioritize the **** out of Speedtest.

Fifelactory premium: Can I max my like? Lol...
Steam: Can I max my line? Lol...
PSN: Can I max my line? Just kill me now...
Youtube: 4k?1080? Even 720 unbuffered? Lol...

Lol. Yeah Afrihost support wanted me to ONLY use Speedtest.net.

So I've been assisted by Afrihost support for over an hour this morning, they informed me all is well on Frogfoot's side. They didn't know of the cable breaks.

Anyway, thanks for clearing it up, AfriNatic!

Edit: Why is the Uploads 667Mbps and down 0.49? Are they running through two separate lines?

The OLT's in these areas are running on backup links to prevent a hard down. these backup links are usually meant just to prevent a hard down and do not have enough capacity to serve everyone.

Download traffic is the most used traffic so the upload is relatively high unless a bunch of clients decided to max their upload on 500Mbps and 1Gbps lines then you will likely see degraded upload speeds.

We don't prioritise any traffic.

Latency plays a big roll in throughput especially if the serving servers are far away.

Would cost you too much to prioritise traffic.

Lets rather say that an/any issue that impacts traffic or performance to a speedtest server would be picked up much quicker and might thus be fixed quicker, than an issue relating to www.barely-ever-used.com

Yeah we have old Sandvine devices that we use to check what kind of traffic is popular and monitoring. We also host our own on network caches for everything available. Akamai, Google, Netflix etc to give the best possible speeds.

Outage Update:

-- All breaks have been accounted for and logged to the respective vendor for attendance.
-- Services affected by multiple cable breaks running concurrently .
-- Re-routing of services are currently being investigated, however due to limited options this currently does not appear to be a fruitful exercise.

Route details below: Updates

-- Route 1: PersPark <> Isando: reported to vendor, update to follow.
-- Route 2: PersPark <> Lynnwood: teams on site investigating, update to follow
-- Route 3: Isando <> Springs: Vendor Civils team attending, update to follow

PSN uses Akamai also yet a 10Gb file takes over 7 hours to download on a 1k/1k FF Afrihost line where it should take 8 minutes.
