Telkom Fiber is installed in my apartment ready for Telkoms fiber beta in the area. Alcatel fiber termination device and new Telkom router is ready and the lights are blinking. Hardware is free during the beta and they will decide what to do with it post beta. Telkom coming tomorrow ( 15/05/2014 ) to come and move my internet and phone over to the Fiber. I'm hoping they let me keep using my RT-N66U router.

I'll take some pics and model numbers of the devices being tested as well as my config and some feedback once it's up and running. I was in another apartment yesterday and the speedtests to the Telkom exchange was 95mbits down and 9.8mbits up. Not too shabby for SA standards. If the capacity is there .. then SA needs to work on latency, but my guess is that is going to take years to see any significant change to the US. Pretty much stuck at +/- 220-250ms to the East Coast and 120-150ms to Amsterdam.

Like I told the people at WA who asked if I wanted to be part of the trial, there is no better person they could have picked :) I VPN ( PPTP and OpenVPN ), FTP all the time, SSH, RDP, Teamviewer. I stream everything ie. music and video using pcs and smartTVs. I'm on skype all the time, connected to our PBX in the US and work on networks and machines all over the world. I should be able to provide some good feedback. I pray there is no "speed cap" on my capped business plan. That would be a tragedy.

I can't WAIT!

Nice. Moullie Point is perfect for FTTx.

Adds to how nice an area it already is

Had mine eventually working since Friday afternoon, and so far absolutely no problems. Was on constantly. Down speed in the 94-96 Mb/s range and no router signal drops so far. You do get to keep all the new equipments after the trial!

Enjoy the speed:D

What's latency to the EU like? Mind doing a traceroute to bbc.co.uk?

How is the trial going?

Is it just happening at one apartment block or other places in the area?

Nice.

Just remember latency is dependent on the distance to your end point, latency will not improve beyond what is physically capable. 120-150ms to Amsterdam is already excellent and you will not likely not get any better than that as light can only travel so fast.

Let us know how it's going.

i was at tenants of mine (beach rd, sea point - near la perla restaurant) on friday, and noticed the pavement had suddenly been dug uo with lots of blue pipes sticking up out of the ground.
1st thing i thought was telkom fibre

For interest.

Who has had Fibre brought to their flat in a block of flats (excluding newer blocks where provision was made when being built)?

What has been your experience with -

1 The body Corporate
2 The Trustees.
3 The logistics of getting the fibre up to your high up flat?

Out of 28 flats (all section title) in my building there are very few who use the internet.

I am mainly interested in how the fibre is taken up to you higher flat without high cost and the buildings external aesthetics.

Thanks
