FTTH Rondebosch

The part that confused me about your post was deteriorating speed over a wired connection when you connect your laptop directly to the router ("when I connect my laptop directly to the router over a wired connection, my download speed is struggling to get above 50Mbps) - is this a typo and you meant wireless? If it's deteriorating over a wired connection, then that would be rather unusual and probably points to an issue with the router.

Nope, not a typo. When I hardwire my laptop directly to my router, I cannot reach a connection speed of above 50Mbps down. That is with the wireless off on the router, so no other clients are connected. I have spoken to my ISP and they say that this router should be good enough for 100Mbps speeds, but I have spoken to a contact of mine, who has told me that the speed capabilities of this router will NEVER give me a connection speed of close to 100Mbps, recommending that I invest in a new router.

Is anyone able to help me understand this, because my understanding is that the LAN/WAN ports only being 10/100Mbps capable is the reason for the slow speed? I have just ordered a new AC1900 router, but want to understand the issue in any case. Thanks :)

Whoop!! Another area of Rondebosch has just gone live on the GIS map, including my street. While the street is reflected as purple (live), I'm still getting the 10mbps icon on my home address, like ajules a few weeks ago - I assume this is just a technicality and that it will be updated soon.

That's great news.Hopefully updated within a week. Are the other houses in your block also showing the 10 mbps icon?

Some showing 10 and some showing 100. However, it appears to be intermittent. I just did a few searches on my own address, and half the time it showed up as 10, and the other half at 100. Same with the neighbours addresses. I assume it's still updating - hopefully we'll get a more settled view in the next day or two.

When my region went purple, it was a matter of only a day or two until the icons changed. Hopefully it'll update soon! Good luck :)

Thank you. Icons finally updated to consistently show fibre availability at 100mbps etc.

I've placed orders with 3 different providers (Cool Ideas, MWeb, WebAfrica) with the (hopefully not flawed) logic, that whoever is able to give me an installation date soonest, will get my business. I'll then cancel with the others.

Will someone let me know if I'll run into any issues doing this? Slightly worried that Openserve will end up with 3 orders for my address...

Firstly congrats on finally going live.
Not sure how the ordering will play out but best to confirm with the ISP’s.Keep us posted.

Thank you! Phew!! Feels like a life milestone has been achieved just seeing the purple colour with fibre available :crylaugh:
Will post updates when it happens.

I don't think placing multiple orders will make it go any faster.

I applied with WA. It's still an Openserve team that actually brings the fibre into the house itself.

I may be wrong but thats how it worked for me. (I'm still not live though).

I finally got a call from OpenServe earlier in the week (on behalf of MWeb) and they came to visit today to plan the installation. Apparently there's a tree "in the way", preventing them from bringing the fibre in via the overhead route they initially planned, so will need to come back to do some ducting. I wasn't home, but this is the message I received from my teenage son, who didn't get (or can't remember) an ETA for their return :erm:

WooHoooo!!! They finally installed at my home today :) . I'm at work, but my son sent a pic and it's the exact same Nokia unit below.

I'm a bit confused though, the techie who was at my home said that my current modem is not compatible with fiber. It's a Netgear DGND4000. I'm pretty sure it has a WAN port.

MWEB will only deliver the "free"modem in 7 days. I asked them to activate in the meantime, but am now concerned that my Netgear won't work. Can anyone advise if the DGND4000 is compatible?

Here's a pic of the Nokia unit they installed.

This is connected via Ethernet cable from the LAN port of the Nokia unit to the Wan port of my Netgear router.Very seamless process.

@sybawoods

I don't have a netgear modem but the manual, downloaded from https://www.netgear.com/support/product/DGND4000.aspx#docs, says the following.

'All-in-one. Built-in ADSL2+ modem and WAN Gigabit Ethernet port for cable or fiber combined with a wireless router create an integrated home gateway.

Thank you. That's my common-sense understanding too. Will give it a try this evening or rush to go and buy one (can't wait another 7 days!!) I thought perhaps we used some country specific protocols which meant that the router was not compatible.

I'm sure it will work.

I have a synology RT2600ac router which I imported from the USA and it works just fine with my openserve fiber.

Live. At last!! Was a simple process to get the connection up and running (PPPoE from the Netgear DGND4000 to the Nokia), entered the login details and voila!

It's going to bother me all night and all week that I'm *only* getting 82mbps on 100mbps account, though. How quickly the goal-posts move :)

What's your pings and upload speeds?
It's a bit all over the place to be honest. Best so far on speedtest is 82 down and 49 up on a 100/50 Mweb Uncapped account.

I just got off the phone and have been told to give it 24hrs for the "handshaking" with the ISP to complete (is that even a thing?).

The online experience so far is pleasant - YouTube no buffering and goes to HD 1080p immediately. Same with NetFlix.

However, we also game online and the pings are generally about 30ms higher to local BattleField servers from CTN to JHB. We were getting 25-30ms consistently on ADSL and now its at about 70ms with Fiber. For international pings, we were averaging about 160ms to Europe, now getting 200ms.

Like I said, they're putting this down to the hand-shaking for now. I'll test again tomorrow and see. If it's shaping protocols on the Mweb Uncapped, I'll move to another account or ISP. The latency is important for us.

Pings and speed has stabilised. Not sure if it's because of late evening or if that "handshaking" is complete.

150ms to Europe (Amsterdam, London)
20ms to JHB servers
5ms to CTN servers

Speed could be better, but I'll settle for this, for now

Personally found speeds to be all over the place on 3 of the ISP’s I have used.Anything from 10 Mbps to 95 Mbps.Thats using Vox,Webafrica and ISPAfrika.Busy testing Afrihost on a capped unshaped account which is looking very promising.
Nevertheless it’s all a massive improvement on my ADSL.Enjoy your spanking new line!
