Galaxy Note 8

If the CSC your phone is running on is contained in the firmware you flash, it will default to your CSC. That's why I went to XFV first, and then back.

There is lots of info on this in sammobile's forums.
So let me see if I understand you:
I should flash official SA Vodafone (XFV), thus changing my csc.
Then, without my sim card in the phone, flash BTU and do Oreo update.
Once I insert my sim, phone will reboot back to XFA csc but keep Oreo.

Do I have this right?

EDIT: Sorry misunderstood my bad.

From what I've read on the forums you should choose the CSC instead of home CSC file to change the CSC.

If you install the same security patch version of BTU as the one you currently have it will revert to the same CSC as what you currently got on the phone according to what you replying to?

Though if it's newer you should install all 3 files from ODIN and between home csc and csc you should install csc.

If you try to downgrade to an earlier XFV I don't think it would allow it as I've tried something similar with a diff Samsung phone.

Ok so I won't be able to flash to the XFV as it is an earlier version....

The BTU and the XFA are on the same security patch version, as far as I can tell.

So in essence - I actually did nothing to my phone except wipe it a couple of times?

That's what it sounds like, but there is hope.
Find a other CSC in the OVF group, as that also contains XFV. If you are with Vodacom and you flash this with the SIM inserted, it should default to XFV. I think I used VDF, use this to check: https://www.sammobile.com/forum/threads/39186-note-8-N950-multi-CSC-pit-language

Edited to correct default to CSC code.

May I ask another question - if I stay on the firmware that I flashed today (which defaulted to XFA), will I still get OTA updates from MTN?

EDIT: And should I be worried that some of the apps (samsung health, smasung members, etc) were missing after the last flash? I managed to donwload and install them without any issue though?

After thinking things through, I think I may just stay on 7.0. Last time it took Samsung six months to a year to update the camera app for my NX1 to be compatible with 7.0. I highly doubt they'll update the app again.

Try removing your SIM card before flashing so that your first boot is without a SIM in the phone. XEF is the default CSC for the European group, but it selects the most appropriate CSC for the SIM card in the phone on first boot.
Worked for me this morning.

My process was:
1. Flash XFV and confirm CSC set to XFV.
2. Remove SIM
3. Flash XEF, let it reboot.
4. Bypass setup and do OTA update to Oreo
5. Insert SIM and reboot
6. SIM change detected, have to reboot, which changes CSC back TO XFE
Tried everything possible with no luck.... just finish restoring my phone. Will wait for the full package to come out and flash via Odin.

LOL! After popping into this thread every few hours, I am going to wait for Vodacom to update me to Oreo, seems it's no longer that easy to flash a new CSC and have the phone stay on it.

I have way too much in terms of Documents (Work and personal), Media, Apps+App Data etc etc... To back and restore, lol.

So thanks to those who tried for those of us not brave enough. :)

As long as the first two CSC codes you see under Settings - About Phone - Software Information - Service Provider SW ver. are the same, you’ll get OTA for that code in my experience.

Don’t know why some of the default apps didn’t automatically install though, I have not come across this before.

Maybe this explains it better than I did. Good luck, I know how frustrating this must be.

Seems like I've got plenty of reading material for today.

I have XFV (Vodacom Phone) running on my Note using MTN.

Before I read through all 100+ posts, will this work for me?

It should.

I did it from running XFV on an XFA phone.

Thanks.

I will read through it and see what they say.

But gut feelings are just telling me to leave it alone.
Had a heart attack quite a number of times yesterday when things didn't work etc.

I appreciate all the help and answers though. Thanks.

Hey guys, I've successfully updated my MTN (XFA) Note 8 to Oreo.. here's how to do it:

1) Download the NZC (New Zealand) firmware using Samfirm. Download Samfirm from http://samfirm.en.lo4d.com/download, run it and type "SM-N950F" under model, choose region "NZC", tick Auto, click "check update", then click "download". Should be fast (I got 40mbit speeds)

2) Download the XEF firmware from https://drive.google.com/file/d/1F3HzI7KAHuUmh6YUr5WZzYQFaAYo-Aff/view?usp=sharing

3) Remove the simcard from your phone

4) Flash NZC firmware using Odin 3.13.1 (use CSC, do NOT use CSC_Home)

5) After quick/skipping setup, reset to factory settings in system settings

6) Flash XEF firmware (use CSC, do NOT use CSC_Home)

7) After quick/skipping setup, reset to factory settings again in system settings

8) After quick/skipping setup again, turn on wifi, check for OTA updates and Oreo will be there (1.4gB download)

Please may I ask someone running 7.1.1 to please do the following:

Please go to Device Maintenance > Storage > Three dots (top right) > Storage Settings > Internal Storage.

Please tell me what it says under system memory.

Mine says 10,9 GB.

Just comparing something quick. Thanks.

Is Samfirm as safe and well known as sammobile?

Yes, perfectly safe - The firmware from Samfirm updated itself to Oreo and I've been using it for 6 hours.. No problems whatsoever

Edit: Oreo is awesome.. I'm surprised nobody else seems to be following my method and updating (or at least reporting back?)
