This 4gb is the largest size card I feel comfortable using. AFAIK the camera only takes about 300 shots before the battery runs out anyway
I might get one for my netbook and see if readyboost makes a difference.

I've used 8GB card for more than a year now and recently I got a 16GB for dirt cheap. Very nice if you shoot movies at 720p or plan on taking RAW photos.
SD is cheaper than CF because it has a serial interface and CF has to allow for legacy transfer modes like IDE (you can use it as an SSD if you like). Mechanically and electrically CF is more complex.

While I do plan on shooting RAW I've always been a bit reluctant to use big cards - all your eggs in one basket sort of thing.

I just picked up a 4gb SDHC card for my new P&S at Makro for R169 - how come SD cards are so much cheaper than CF?

You're falling for the scaremongering, really. The well known brand names (Sandisk, Lexar, et al) have a much lower failure rate than even server-grade hard drives.
Or are you still hanging on to that that 2.1GB hard disc?
Anyway, when you get that 1D, you'd be able to stick in two cards and run them in a mirror configuration - two baskets...
I've had cards fail due to a faulty reader. I dont know what happened all I know is I lost all the data on the original CF card and all the subsequent cards I tested with. Only a format would restore them. I wasnt able to recover anything.
You of all people should also know that card failure isnt the only risk. Cameras are also susceptible to loss and theft. I fill up one card or there is a break in my shooting and deep in my pocket it goes.
Lots of eggs in lots of baskets.

Fair enough, the only pictures I ever lost was on the card that was in the camera when it was stolen.
Turns out my buying the card was premature anyway.
When ups wanted $170 to ship the camera my dad balked and went to the post office. Can't blame him at all but now the delivery of my camera is in the hands of the SAPO!
At least it's insured.

When ups wanted $170 to ship the camera my dad balked and went to the post office. Can't blame him at all but now the delivery of my camera is in the hands of the SAPO!
Eish! Just to follow up on the card size debate. I guess my attitude is that I don't need to fill up a card before pulling stuff off it - in fact, I hardly ever do more than a couple of shots at a time between imports/backups. But if I ever find myself in a situation where for what ever reason I don't have another card to switch to, I know I at least have the space. Doesn't hurt to have it.
If I have to carry a spare battery to take the photos I can also carry a spare card to put them on

Prices per GB are extremely cheapish these days. Unless u're buying top speeds (Sandisk Ducati range) or expensive brands. I also carry a spare card with me. I've never had any mishaps but a friend of mine had his memory cards corrupted on quite a few occasions. I need to get a few more CF cards.

I also shoot without a tripod - its makes for more of a challenge. How do you make your HDRs ?
Set exposure to -2. Take shot. Set exposure to 0 (usually. Sometimes -1). Take shot. Set to +2. Take shot. I dont have an auto bracketing feature or tripod, so I just try hold steady, and keep the camera in place while doing that and for what I cant keep still, let photomatix try compensate for shifts and ghosting to the best of its ability.

My camera has bracketing mode so I just chose the EV step (0.3 / 0.7 / 1.0) and it will take three shots with the EV differences I selected - no problem there. My questions is what software. Is Photomatix free ?
