The latest Lr 7.3 update with the new profiles location and full screen previews is a game changer, the new Lr default profiles are also great, thus far it seems they are good enough that it might negate the need for 3rd party presets/profiles like Vsco.

This itch has been nagging at me for a while now to upgrade to a full frame body mainly for the low light benefits and better DOF. Find myself doing a lot more photos of the kids at school functions and at night when camping. 70D struggling in those conditions.
Any reason why I'd pay R20k more for the 5D MK IV vs the 6D MKii?
Apart from the much better video which I am not really into?
And with current Canon cashback specials (R6000 back on 6D) I can essentially pick up the 6D for R20k.
5D for about R40k with cashback.
Getting rid of my 70D and the two EF-S lenses I have left then means I can also make a big dent in the cost of getting a 24-70mm F2.8 and perhaps a battery grip as well.
Current setup is:
70D Body
70-200mm F2.8
50mm F1.8
24mm F2.8 EF-S Mount
18-135mm STM EF-S Mount

Have you seen the specials at ORMS? I see they have the 5Ds R Body for 47k (a used one for 30k)
Seems like the 6D has more fps and slightly lower MP, Not sure the higher cost for the 5D is worth it - I must be missing something.

5D actually is actually 0.5fps faster and yes a bit more MP. None of those are deal breakers for me though. Not R20k more anyway.
I have however spent most of the afternoon reading reviews and watching videos and seems like the 6D gets quite a bashing because of its poor Dynamic Range performance at very low ISO. This might just be a deal breaker for me because of blow out in landscapes and other high contrast scenarios (eg sport photography, kids playing outside on sunny days and wildlife).
Another thing that might irritate me is the coverage of the auto-focus points in the viewfinder. They cover pretty much just the center and are very tightly packed. And I find myself always using quite a wide range of the focus points when it comes to composing, especially with the kids. So no use having 26 more focus points if they are not covering much of the frame.
But I also have to remember that this is an entry level Full Frame and it is priced as such. And I'm not looking to go professional at all but I do take my photography very serious and quality is very important. I still cringe at my wife and her out of focus and noisy photos she snaps, thinking they look okay.
Sorry for rambling on and on. I'm just trying to convince myself whether it is a good idea or not. Nobody in my family or close friends even know what back button focusing or ISO is so can't engage with any of them for advice.

lol Then go with the one you want. It may cost more but you are clearly leaning in that direction. No point settling because it is the sensible financial move. Take the camera that meets your requirements.
And I know what you mean. I have been taking photos for many years and my partner doesn't even look at them. And even going to the zoo I feel stupid standing next to all the cellphones and iPads

That's the thing. Budget is quite a big factor in the purchase. Especially because it is just a hobby and we have a few things coming up in the next year or two.
I started out looking at the second hand deals available on a 5D Mkiii (but it is a 2012 camera and we all like newer tech) and then more recently the 5D MKIV, hoping for a killer Black Friday deal. But no luck.
Only then really spotted the 6D Mkii and started comparing and was pleasantly surprised by the price bracket it falls in.
Now it is like everything else. I start over-analysing every little thing and reading/watching every review available. Further confusing myself.
Yeah. My wife has zero interest in photography and how/why that/this makes a difference. But absolutely loves showing off the photos for comments and likes on Vleisboek.
Not even going to start about the comments of said zoo cellphone photographers about the size of your kit and how it can probably shoot the man on the moon.

Bwana, have you ever been hassled for taking photos using a DSLR with a telephoto lens in the stadiums? I read the t&c's on a ticket once and it said it's not allowed which I think is a shame. But is it actually enforced or do the staff look the other way?
I'd like to try at a Mzansi Super League match but don't want to be refused and then have to leave the gear in the car unattended.
Me personally, no, but then I'm accredited. That said I've never heard of someone being turned away from St George's or Buffalo Park because they had a camera so I think you'll be safe.
BTW - "safe" is relative - I've shot two matches this season - one 4-day and one MSL and I've been hit twice. Once in the face as I was setting up for the 4-day and then again just the other day I got cracked in the ankle while I was waiting to shoot the coin toss... I'm still limping from that one!
EDIT: what lens are you thinking of bringing? 300mm is probably the shortest I'd pack for the stands.

Well 300mm is the longest I own. Tis just a hobby I've taken up now so looking for something different to shoot other than birds and thought a sport match would be good.
First time was a four that bounced up into my face the second was while they were warming up.

So I just checked with Canon and the R6000 cashback on the 6D MKii is only valid for any purchase done before 12 tonight. It was only part of the Black Friday promotion. https://canon-south-africa-cashback-2018.sales-promotions.com/

Other than the dynamic range and resoution, the 5D IV probably has better and faster auto focus as well. I have the original 6D, and the slow focussing speed is a definite hindrance for me when the subject is moving.
It's still better than my previous camera though, and I wouldn't have paid the difference for the 5D III anyway.
