I've had the R7 for longer but overall I use it as my primary for cricket and mostly with mechanical shutter to avoid rolling shutter. If I switch to the R6mk2 I have to use a teleconverter but I can usually get away with the electronic shutter. For sports like soccer, hockey, and rugby the R6 is my primary.

I'm planning on getting the R7mk2 when it's available, assuming all the foibles have been fixed, so I dont mind the extra actuations on the mk1.

I see, so you are mainly using the R7 due to the crop for adding focal length. Cause I always see a lot of commotion about FF vs APS-C, but from my experience thus far unless there is really low light, or bad lighting conditions the APS-C with a nice lens produces really good looking images.

I am also potentially looking at the R7mk2, but for now I want to get a few lenses still, looking at getting a 2nd hand EF 70-200. Would you recommend 2.8 or is 4 fine for most cases. I assume the 2.8 might be a bit better if you get a situation where it is needed and you don't have it

I have both the EF 70-200 f/4 and F/2.8 but I mainly use the F/4 these days. It's tack sharp. Mine the original model so it doesn't have IS but my mirrorless bodies have built in IS so it really doesn't matter.
 
Just gonna fall in here.

I am thinking about getting a camera. Something that can zoom. And do decentish video etc. Like an all-rounder. Mostly for the kids sport etc.
What's the current flavor of the month? I was looking at the Nikon Coolpix P950. What else should I be looking at?

Hi, need some help here. I think of buying a Canon EOS R5 and combine it with a Nikkon Nikkor Z 180-600mm lens.

I'm not sure if the combination will work though and if I will be able to make use of all functions on the lens.

I'm new to photography and would like to take it up as a hobby.

Mainly for wildlife.

You would need adapter, and smart one that can translate protocols.
I have one so I can use canon lens on fuji camera and it works quite well. they are around r5k

Any particular reason for buying canon instead of nikon body?

Well, the Nikon body I was looking at is priced at R66985 at Takealot. The Canon is a bit cheaper at R59649

Nikon Z8 Mirrorless Camera

The lenses I'm looking at,
Nikon NIKKOR Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR Lens at R34995

Shop around on all the second hand tech forums and sites.

It's not going to work - the flange on the canon RF lenses is 4mm longer than the Nikon. Pick a system and stick with it.

Your choice of bodies might be a bit of an overkill.

What sort of wildlife?

That is very impressive equipment requirements. As a newbie, I would say buy something good but not as high-end until you find you really have a need for it. And I would agree with Bwana - it is easier to choose one and stick to it. I shot with both Canon and Nikon and the Canon just fit my small hands better - and I liked the menu system. But both are excellent brands - and there are more I have not tried. It is an expensive hobby and most have equivalent lenses. The photographers I know say the glass is king. So choose the lenses you want most and go with that brand in body too. This is advice from a fellow noob - so wait to hear what the pros say. If you do have money to burn - I would put it into extra accessories like telescopes so you can get that snap of Saturn, extra cards and batteries so you are not stuck somewhere with no space or no power. A remote trigger and tripod that can hold the kind of lenses you are looking at using. It is not funny when you are taking shots and the tripod topples over - and your life flashes before your eyes. Not all are created equal o_O
A cheaper backup camera is also a great idea. I was in the middle of a shoot and my mirror housing broke. Yes - I could not afford mirrorless at that time.

Looking to go to Kruger, Addo and other parks with the new gear.

Seems like I would go Nikon for everything and tone down on the body. Still looking though.
 
Can you use the older Af-s Nikon lenses with an adapter on the Nikon mirrorless bodies?

There are third party lenses from Sigma and Tamron that shouldn't be discounted.

Also, there are plenty of excellent 2nd hand dslr bodies going for a song these days.

Mirrorless is worth the upgrade in my opinion, although some of the last Dslrs seemed to get live view right.
Also future proofed with a current lens mount but I wouldn't buy one new 2hnd is great.

That being said there are some epic bargains to be had on Dslrs, especially full frame, you can get a near flagship full frame Nikon or Canon body for relative peanuts and they are obviously still as great as the day they were released. Basic image quality other than at the outer reaches of low light hasn't really changed much over the last 10Yrs or so.

I am not a fan of live view shooting.

I was shooting 2x full frame cameras last night, one dslr and one mirrorless, and it's pretty easy to chop and change between the two... except the dslr is so much heavier. :ROFL:

I don't think I would replace a broken dslr with another dslr but I'm not getting rid of them while they still work. My kids, who are starting off, have access to a drawer full of dslr bodies to pick from.
 
So here is a situation I found myself in over the weekend.

Our daughter and her team qualified for the Gauteng Netball Champs by ending 2nd in their league this season.
Playoffs for SA Champs were held on Friday and Saturday at Hoërskool Randburg.
9 games over the two days to decide who goes through to the SA Champs in Polokwane next month.

This whole pre-season, season and practice matches I was the photographer at all their matches. No issues. Coaches and referees even allowed me to take up a spot in a dead zone on the courts when we arranged ahead of time.

Come Gauteng champs, the organisers of the event sourced a company to come and take photos and sell them at R130 per digital photo over the course of the 2 days. They were the only photographers allowed on court and in designated areas. Which I respected.
Let it also be noted that no correspondence was received by us or the schools involved that there will be no photography allowed. Nothing in the rules or terms or conditions of the tournament.

Just to give more perspective. There were only three photographers for all 8 courts. with 28 Rounds of matches.

I fully respect the right that only they had the rights to be on the courts to take photos. And makes sense because of the size of the tournament and the amount of players and officials involved.

But when I started taking photos from the side (and through the fencing on some of the courts), they quickly hurried over to me and informed me that nobody was allowed to take photos.
To which I replied that I am a parent and I've been the official photographer of the team the whole season, and I respect that they have the rights to be the official photographers on the court.
But they will not stop me from taking photos from a spectator space of my daughter and her team.

The guy then told me that they had paid R12'000 to be the photographers of the tournament.

I again replied that I understand that and that I am only taking photos of our team. No other games or other teams. And also from a public/spectator space.
I continued taking photos to which the guy's response was to keep standing in front of me and my camera so that I could not take photos. Instead of taking photos of the matches himself.
I then asked him why is not stopping the other parents with mik-en-druk cameras or the parents taking videos and photos on their cellphones. To which he walked away.

Come the next game. Same thing again. He hurried over from three courts over to come and stand in front of me. At which point one of the other parents got involved and asked him where the POPI consent form is that he signed, allowing them to take photos of his kid and sell those photos for a profit?

Again, there were only three photographers between 8 courts. And they mainly stayed on Courts 1, 2 and 3. Unless I started taking photos of our team and then they would hurry over to the court to obscure my field of view.

Needless to say. I continued to take photos of all 9 games our girls played. All of the photos were only shared with our team Whatsapp group and with the school liaison for there records and use. No charge.

Obviously the only issue here was that I had similar or better equipment than them and they knew they would not be making any money from our team.

Was I in the wrog here?

These are not professinal players, it is just our kids and I wanted to capture the memories for them and the parents.
