I yesterday received a blackberry 8900 as a gift and inserted my promptly inserted my sim card. However, I am currently not on a Blackberry contract. Is it possible to get BIS, perhaps as an additional bundle that can be purchased? Any suggestions as to what I can do without terminating the contract/getting a new SIM card?

Any help would be appreciated!

Yebo - its an add on Service. Once you have requested it to be activated, watch for the GPRS or Edge in the top right of the screen to go into CAPS. This will mean you are now connecting via the blackberry Server

but is it not possible to pay for BIS separately despite being on contract? The business that pays my phone won't pay any more on my existing contract and I think they're sufficiently impersonal to let me negotiate a deal where I pay part of the contract. I don't want to lose the contract because otherwise I'd have to pay everything myself. What are my options?

With some contracts, esp business contracts, you aren't able to add on services as the user. Friend of mine had a contract in her dad's business's name although it was her personal phone. She couldn't even activate wap / gprs / 3g whatever you wanna call it. Her dad had to give her a letterhead with approval to be faxed through.
