Vodacom and MultiChoice have signed a deal allowing the cellular provider to sell consumers a DStv bouquet which costs only R 139-00.

Lol

and if the DSTV compact for R199 is anything to go by...
:D

What is "DSTV select" anyway - MNet series and Hallmark? I love hallmark - if you miss it this month, it will play every month for the rest of the year, and you will be able to see "the making of" a few times in between :D

Why can't they just make a shopping cart. I only watch a handful of channels. But not those particular channels, so I'm still stuck paying R400+.

There could be a basic access fee (with sabc and e-tv thrown in) and then a specific charge per channel. Just let me choose what I want.

Agreement. I must say about 90% of the current channels I never ever watch...Let us pick what we want!

They will never allow you to pick what you want. They make their money by including things in the bundle you may never watch.

Like the market trader who selects the apples for you, it is their prerogative to include a few unripe ones ;)

BSKYB do it too, though their charges are a lot cheaper and the quality is much higher.

Easy - they know that you want what they can't afford to offer at the price and still make a killing.

And then they'll charge R1 for the CCTV channel and R99 for a Movie channel.

Damn, I thought they said R139 for Mnet, not Mnet Series! :(
I just want 3 Super Sport channels, or maybe 1 channel that allows showing between cricket/rugby/soccer/tennis.

I don't want all the rest. Euronews, History, Crime!!:mad:

They will be launching the PPV (Pay Per View) channels in due course. I suppose it would not be in DSTV's interest to improve the MM channels when they will charge extra for the better PPV ones.
Everyone's out to make a buck in this new democracy.

I think you guys are forgetting (or unaware) that Pay TV is a failure world wide... less than 20% of TVs have some sort of pay service attatched to them. Thats *REALLY* bad.

People buy DSTV for the sport and because they think SABC/ETV is rubbish.

Look, there just isn't a whole lot of *good* Pay TV out there for Multichoice to license. DSTV probably has a lot of interesting stuff, you just can't find it in the maze of 50+ channels.

A lot of the failure (in pay tv) is the high cost of "Content proection". I.e. each network has a custom designed decoder with expensive content protection systems built into them (think of your DSTV smart card). Most networks (excluding multichoice) give the decoders away for free and they replace them when they break. All that costs a pretty penny.

Add to that, the cost of starting up (over R100 million) and licensing issues which just stifens competition in many countries.

The only real hope for all of this is the internet... buy what you want, watch when you want and get niche content that actually interests you. You will just give them 10 years.

Channel 20 is Supersport Zone. Trying to figure out what Supersport Action is, even on dstv.com there is no schedule for it.???

Still nothing I would go for as the Mnet is not there, surely this is similar the cheap Multichoice boquet they sell for R199.

There is a Supersport Active SSAct (kind of a multiscreen menu) and now there is another channel call SSa. I don't know if it appears on the normal decoders. It's just black, but it's owned by Multichoice.
Perhaps they haven't switched on yet.
