Hi, I'm hoping to make a few bucks with a tourism-related website.

I want to get tour companies, hotels, airlines, guesthouses, etc to place adverts on my website and I'm hoping to generate income from this.

I'm reasonably handy with Perl, Javascript, etc, so I'm not afraid to code up a 'per click' solution and send traffic to external websites.

I just want to know the rates I should charge, what are the requirements of the industry when it comes to billing and what pitfalls I should look out for.

Can anyone offer some sound advice?

Yea, do some research, there are billions of sites doing this already, pick 8 of them and phone them pretending to be a wannabe lister, asking how much it would cost to add your fake B&B to their site.

Yes, homework does continue after school.

Jesus, I came here for advice, not a bloody lecture. Who put bloody vinegar in YOUR Weet-a-bix?

I have already googled but I am looking specifically for South African based information.

Search the forum, there are plenty of threads dealing with this.

I have. I used the keyword 'advertising' which drew a blank.

However, as you assure me that such threads do exist, I shall widen my search and try other keywords.

Thanks for your assistance.

Who you calling Jesus?
Do I look like the president of the ANC?
My advice was sound and valuable, if you don't want to research the competition then why make it my problem?

I tried 'pay per click' as my keywords in a search, but that also drew a blank.

The thread you pointed me to, while interesting, does not give me the information I'm after.

That thread refers to google referrals and to things like 'Test your IQ' banners which are clearly not what I'm interested in.

I want information that can tell me how much I should charge the old bid who runs a B & B for any custom I can put her way.

I cannot understand why this should elicit sarcastic remarks about going to school.

I'm amazed at how much anger you hold, but quite clearly this forum is not a place to come to if you need assistance.

Thank you and Good Day.

@Snake; I apologise for my "Yes, homework does continue after school." comment.

Now, go and do some research:
1. Open your web browser and open the google.co.za website.
2. Enter "south coast holiday accommodation" as your search string.
3. Select the Pages from South Africa radio button.
4. Click on search.

Wham ... google will give you 9 places to call to do your research on in the South Coast area.
If you replace South Coast with the area you are interested in covering, you may get results that are more suited to your research needs.

I got a website running only on ads... It was to show a friend how it looks and works???

Willing to see it pls pm me*...
Also give some advice...

Don't want to get warn for helping, so only interested people who PM me...

yah, I do think... but one ad is local indeed.. the rest is international via paypal.

Ah i see.. What kind of income can a website expect? I know it depends on the type etc etc. but for a fairly popular website, what kind of income pm can one expect?

You think I'm not already doing this?

Years ago, before the advent of the www, the usenets and BBs were full of, admittedly intelligent, but mostly arrogant, self important twits who made it their mission in life to be as obnoxious and rude to anyone they perceived as being a n00b. Believe me I've had run ins with thousands of them.

What are you talking about?

I'm trying to get some kind of feel for what rates I should be charging to carry adverts on my web site, not looking for a beach chalet in Margate.

Rinkhals, call them and pretend you want to advertise your fictitious B&B on their site to see how much they charge per month. That will give you a good idea of what the competition is asking.
