Getting Adverts on my Website

I'm enjoying this thread... :D

Well I'm not.

Why is it that so few are interested in helping people here?

"Go away and google". You think I haven't googled? You think that this was the first stop?

"Go away and do a search of the forum". You think I didn't do that?

"Go back to school". Buddy, I'm probably old enough to be your grandfather.

Any advice on here that isn't downright insulting seems to be along the lines of "Don't bother, you're not good enough to make it work".

I don't know, is this a particularly South African thing?

No its not, its when ignorant idiots like you take what is said out of context.

Nobody ever said you should go back to school. They said that homework doesn't end with school. That wasn't an insult. It was a truth.

If you really did try Google, then how did I come up with the rate card of what a SOUTH AFRICAN tourist website asks for advertising within my first hit?

Seriously old timer... learn to Google, you'll probably find more and better results and never have to show your face in the forum.

Also update your arsenal. If this seems "harsh" so be it, but you started it with that stupid ****ing attitude you brought here after someone tried helping you and posted it.

Sure, you probably TRIED to Google or Search the forum before asking, but you could've been nicer about it when someone did reply to your ****ing useless thread.

Piss off

Lets review YOUR bad attitude in this thread:

A long time a go in a thread right here.......

Hi, I'm hoping to make a few bucks with a tourism-related website.

I want to get tour companies, hotels, airlines, guesthouses, etc to place adverts on my website and I'm hoping to generate income from this.

I'm reasonably handy with Perl, Javascript, etc, so I'm not afraid to code up a 'per click' solution and send traffic to external websites.

I just want to know the rates I should charge, what are the requirements of the industry when it comes to billing and what pitfalls I should look out for.

Can anyone offer some sound advice?

Okay so the obvious point to make here is look at where you've posted:
Software & Web Development
Software Development including web design & development

Okay? This is not a forum for free business advice, see the problem? I don't read anything there on any issues you're having developeing your site, you want free business advice, period! More on this later.

Yea, do some research, there are billions of sites doing this already, pick 8 of them and phone them pretending to be a wannabe lister, asking how much it would cost to add your fake B&B to their site.

Yes, homework does continue after school.
Jesus, I came here for advice, not a bloody lecture. Who put bloody vinegar in YOUR Weet-a-bix?

I have already googled but I am looking specifically for South African based information.

He actually gave you some pretty good advice there guy! Sure he made a sarcastic remark and apologized for it later:

@Snake; I apologise for my "Yes, homework does continue after school." comment.

Now, go and do some research:
1. Open your web browser and open the google.co.za website.
2. Enter "south coast holiday accommodation" as your search string.
3. Select the Pages from South Africa radio button.
4. Click on search.

Wham ... google will give you 9 places to call to do your research on in the South Coast area.
If you replace South Coast with the area you are interested in covering, you may get results that are more suited to your research needs.

But do you think attacking the first person to reply to your post is a good way to elicit help? Obviously not, grow up! Maybe you need to google how to google?

Dude if you actually read what people were saying instead of instantly taking offence, maybe then you would calm down a little bit. If you look at your quote below you'd see that the guys actually gave you an answer to your question:
I'm trying to get some kind of feel for what rates I should be charging to carry adverts on my web site, not looking for a beach chalet in Margate.

Here's what he's saying:
1. Google South African B&B's
2. Phone them up and check what they'd charge you for advertising.
3. ??????
4. Profit!

And on we go:

You think I'm not already doing this?

Years ago, before the advent of the www, the usenets and BBs were full of, admittedly intelligent, but mostly arrogant, self important twits who made it their mission in life to be as obnoxious and rude to anyone they perceived as being a n00b. Believe me I've had run ins with thousands of them.

Again attacking advice given? Just because someone offers you advice that YOU don't like, doesn't mean they aren't trying to help you, hey? And if you've been around as long as you say you have surely you should know this already. I particually like this comment of yours "Believe me I've had run ins with thousands of them." clearly you have a history of causing/trolling/whatever it is you do to upset people, and maybe your attitude is the problem? But I suppose that's not the case we all a bunch of arrogant twits....

And the same theme continues throughout so I don't think I'll quote every post you made as the point is clear. This is not a forum for free business advice and never will be.

Lets use a stupid example to clarify what you asked this forum:
Imagine you want to start a Bank, so you approach FNB, Standard Bank, ABSA etc and say: "Hi guys I want to start my own bank :) lol I was wondering how do you calculate you bank charges because I want to make sure I charge the right amount". Clearly they're going to help you will all the market reasearch/cost/analysis etc that they've done.

I think the final point to make is that the internet is not free money and NO one is going to help you MAKE MONEY. We'll help you with the IT developemnt problems but the core business like costing etc is your problem and yours alone. And if you have such a brilliant money making idea posting on a public forum is a brilliant idea because of the 6 odd billion people in this world one of them is sure to read it have more time and better skill to pull if off that you do!

  • People here are actually very helpfull, when they aren't attacked by people like you.
  • If you are old enough to be my grandfather, your attitude doesn't show it.

Wow. Harsh Acid... Chill man! Have a cup of coffee, or 20.

@Rinkhals: You must understand that you're dealing with (mostly young) professionals under extreme pressure at work here. We help out when / where / how we can, but as we all around here learned, the School of Hard Knox is the only way to get ahead. I very, very seldom ask for help or opinions - I search the deepest, darkest nooks and crannies of programming sites to find what I'm looking for.

As already suggested in this thread, contact (phone, not email) a few of the tourism advertising sites and ask them about their rates. They don't need to know you're planning on being "competition". After you know the rates, charge about half (even a quarter) of what they're charging to you prospective clients. Internet advertising is all about hits and popularity. Clients will shy away from high prices if they know the site has only recently been launched. If you can somehow prove that your site will gain in popularity in the tourism sector, you might be able to justify higher rates.

Finally, take everything here with a pinch of salt. You'll quickly learn the culture around here... ;)
