Global Axxess bites the dust

If the Netflix "hole" had not made such big news it might still have been going. Reporting such things on MyBB is going to attract attention ;)
 
Having never tried to use Netflix, I thought this would kind of assist me to make the jump but maybe I will try the other services which earlier posters have mentioned. Hope they can survive these legal pressures.

was my thoughts too ... offer it to your clients, send a quiet newsletter to your users, and shhhh about it in public.
but then people should also mind their own fn business, if somebody else offers something that you cant or wont, then sort your own ***** out .
but the whole problem is this area specific crap... our money should be as good as the US'ers

Mmm ... I remember being assured on this site that there is nothing illegal about streaming Netflix in SA, and I was told that I have a faulty understanding of the law if I try to argue otherwise. For a completely legal venture Axxess shut this down remarkably fast.
 
I wonder if Axxess will give more details regarding the type of legal pressure the received? Shutting down a new service after about 2 weeks must mean that it was something serious? Surely they would have done homework beforehand to check that this service is not against the law in SA?

Not really, it's just makes no economic sense to pursue it. I suspect if the average internet user understood the economics of being an ISP, they'd cringe.
 
It was MonoChoice/MultiScum.
Show me the law in this country that makes it impermissible -certainly beyond ICASA's jurisdiction.
 
Either Times Media (I doubt it) or Naspers. The majority of people have used Unotelly already, so I doubt that Axxess attracted a big customer base. Would be interesting to eventually find out what those legal pressures were. To me it seems that local media groups pressured Axxess that their customers would commit copyright infringement due to bypassing the region restrictions and perhaps Axxess removed the service to safeguard their customers.

As far as I know, it is completely legally to provide a DNS/region service (although the access to region blocked content is illegal - which would have exposure to users of the service), so it is a bit puzzling why Axxess gave in so quick (and why they decided to launch the service without properly checking legal facts).

Make no mistake, the only @ssh0les that would complain would be Naspers and Multichoice.

Ask anyone that was working there when they dropped the Sci-Fi channel how they blatantly lied to the public about it!
 
Legal pressure on what grounds, surely, if the user uses the service to access Georestricted content its not the the ISP's fault as they simply offer the service (in good faith), by this reasoning all ISPs should shut down and no longer offer internet access as some users may use torrents?
