Golf mk6 gti or something else?

Something funky with those fuel consumption specs at the bottom...

I saw that too :/

I was looking at the Astra 1.6t roux, it looks pretty good actually. Lots of lil things that make life easier in the car. An the boot space seems good.
And i really like the changing light color when you press the sport button.

Glad to see I am not the only one that thinks it looks good. Then again many motoring publication have said that the new Astra looks better than anything in its class. Performance wise it is a bit of a downsize from the older generations of 2.0 Sport models, but the 1.6T is not a slow car at all.

ALFAHOLIC, you're a sell out so I'm not sure if we should listen to you :p

Have you had a look at the 1.6t Astra, tau1z?

not yet, are they available locally yet? Its pricey for the performance you get....and i have had an issue with astra interiors for a while now...
to be fair, i havent really given it a chance though

Yeah, I don't really have an opinion on the Astra myself yet, but it's probably worth a look if they're available, just to have a comparo with something new in the segment.

prob, but it wont be a gti contender
for that you will have to wait for the opc, if it comes

Some cursory reads about the Astra reveals some good opinions:

But none of that would matter to the average car buyer if the new Vauxhall Astra wasn’t a very good car.

I can tell you, it’s not only very good. It leaps straight to the top of its class.

The first important reason goes back to the steam age. It’s called the Watt’s linkage and was originally designed by James of the same name to constrain the movement of a steam engine piston in a straight line. When applied to a car’s rear suspension it prevents relative sideways motion between the axle and body of the car much more effectively than a single Panhard rod. In the case of the new Astra, it allowed the engineers to use much softer rear axle trailing arm bushes and fit softer springs without compromising the car’s roadholding.

And it works sensationally well. The car takes bends so smoothly and naturally you can find yourself going 20mph faster through them. Yet at the same time the car has the ride quality of a good limousine, even on the 205/50 R17 tyres ours came fitted with.

consider the crunch question: should you consider one over a Golf or Focus?

Short answer: yes, you should. The price, for a start, should keep you interested: similarly specced, the Astra undercuts the Focus by a few hundred quid, and the Golf by more. Mechanically, dynamically and, er, interiorially, the Astra is a fine car. It doesn't move the hatchback game on like the original Focus did in 1998, but it propels Vauxhall right to the head of the pack, a worthy rival that'll match the big boys in just about every department and maybe edge them out in one or two

Of course, there's no direct GTi competitor on the market right now, but the 1.6 turbo is like R50k cheaper than a GTi.

Check out the video on the previous page and also the one below (I have posted it before in other threads). The Astra 1.6 Turbo will not come close to the GTi in terms of performance, but it will have a lot more kit if you compare it on a price basis. In the past it was hard to say Astra G is prettier than the Golf4 or Astra H looks nicer than Golf5, but with this new Astra J you would be hard pressed not to agree that it looks much better than Golf6 or the Focus. Interior quality does seem to have improved since the 90's so I would not be too concerned about it.

If you want brute performance in this segment get the [-]Golf 6 GTi[/-] default. If you want something different with a bit more style and individuality that delivers acceptable performance the Astra is the only option.

I'm actually dissapointed with the look of the new Astra. I'm a big Opel fan, still drive my 96 Kadett 200is and was looking to replace it soon but I'm not impressed with the look of the Astra at all. It looks really bland from the front and the side and rear view looks like a Mazda3, which I hate. Too stationwagon-ish with the additional window at the C-pillar. Maybe I'll like it a bit more when I see it in the metal. The new GTC's styling on the otherhand looks amazing.

You have a point there - I see the same things you describe - however beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I have drooled over Vectras for a long time now and when the new Insiginia came out it was like seeing one of the most beautiful sedans ever made. So I guess I'm biased towards their new styling DNA. But as I said, your observations are right and I believe there are others like you that do not fancy the new Opel look.

You should get a new Prius. 0-100's not quite as quick as you'd like, but it fits the bill for a dad's car - very spacious and fuel efficient too! :D

Or get the new Honda CRZ - sporty looks / drive and hybrid efficiency. :D

The Astra looks like a Mazda 3.

I would go for the GTi.

No, Astra looks like Insignia

There are some similarities with the Mazda 3 but that is only cause the Mazda 3 is a very sexy car.

GTi looks common and boring.
