I am looking to get something that just works, that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Everyone is talking about Sage, but that is R325 a month.

Some of my friends uses QuickBooks but they say its not the best.

I've tried Sage and Xero but settled on Zoho. Much cheaper and it does everything the more expensive package does.

My bookkeeper recommends QuickBooks, and it’s currently on a special of R24/month for three months. Can’t really beat that. She can also get me a discounted subscription after that using some credit she has from QuickBooks, so win-win I guess? Seems dead easy to use for my super basic purposes. Your mileage might vary, but at that low cost you can sign up and take the free onboarding session with one of their trainers and see if it will work for you.

I use manager free for 1 user on your computer it works for me. The subscription is about R600 per month if you want to upgrade for server or more users.

R1000 per year vs. R350 per month. I can put up with some convoluted bits.
We went from Sage, to Zoho and then to Xero. Xero seems to works for us. Zoho was just a too convoluted.

Excel.

I know nothing about accounting/bookkeeping.
Came here to say this.

Anyone using Xero that can invite me as an advisor = then I can get it for free so a bottle of Brandy/Rum is on the table for someone! PM me thanks, will greatly appreciate

I used to use akaunting completely free before they pulled everything out(payroll, POS, inventory etc). I currently using ERPNext for some clients and for less tech client I push them to quickbooks. Personally ERPNext does what I need it to do, integrates well with opencart but you got to be techy. Its free and the 4 clients that use it don't pay me anymore. No issues or calls so far for past 2+ years so the switch seems to be working well. All 4 clients was on Pastel 6 until they had to upgrade. All they do is invoices(from POS system/opencart), inventory(from POS system/opencart), payroll(important) and export it to they accountant to do vat/financials. I had to create a plugin to convert pastel 6 exported file into ERPnext since the POS system only supported that.
