Can anybody suggest a good ADSL Modem/router with at least the following features:

  • Behaves as a router (DHCP, etc)
  • Also allows 'bridging' so individual PC's can dial PPPOE
  • Can do both of the above at the same time :)
  • Built in wireless
  • STABLE
  • Built in ADSL modem (doesn't require external device, obviously)

Feedback would be appreciated :)

Thanks

Isn't it a contradiction to expect it to do both DHCP AND bridge mode simultaneously? My understanding is that in bridge mode, it is only a modem and hands over DHCP responsibilities to the machine with the dial-up connection set up (and Internet Connection Sharing on) - i.e. the gateway (192.168.0.1?).

I don't think my router can do simultaneous bridge and DHCP, but otherwise it fits the bill on the rest and I highly recommend it: Netgear DG834GT.

Although, if you have sufficient budget, you may want to consider buying into the "n" standard now, or at least a MIMO for extended range/performance.

Thanx donaldza for asking the question. I was about to post the same kind of question today, seeing as my ADSL line is being installed this week.:)

My 1st choice would be the Netgear DG834GT, going on the comments posted on this forum, but the Linksys WAG54GS and the D-Link2640U does not look too bad either, spec wise that is.

Just FYI regarding the Bridging + Routing mode.

You DO get routers that do both. I had a D-Link 504G which is now broken and impossible to replace... If I could I would, but it doesn't have Wireless which I want now.

I don't think the Netgear can do both at the same time either...

+1 for netgear.
DG834GT - by far the most stable router i have worked with.

Netgear 834G v4 supports all that. Default is "router" mode, but with the new firmware supports PPPoe relay.

mm this is probably meant for another thread but..
HOW do you put the Billion 800VGT into Bridgemode.
If i understand correctly this means that all ports are open for any app to work through. Im relly dumb with routers.
All I actually want to do is to be able to host a game online but the ports is blocked.

You can definitely do both with the Billion 7300G, its given me no problems at all so far, I've got the 7300M but the 7300G's the same, it just doesn't have MIMO.

Sorry, don't know how to put your router into bridge mode, but I thought I would chip in with the understanding: yes, in bridge mode, your router acts purely as a modem connected to your computer, which becomes the "master" on your network (where previously, your router would have been) - it will assign the IP addresses, and be the device on your network that all others route their traffic through. It will need to have Internet Connection Sharing enabled (assuming you are using Windows) on the connection you set up to "dial in" to your ADSL ISP, and it will be directly 'exposed' to the Internet, meaning you will need to ensure you have a firewall set up to protect yourself.

As for not being able to host a game - is this a PC game or console?

Lastly, see if you can find an option called DMZ in your Firewall. Then, input the IP address of your PC (or console, if that is what you are using). This will effectively turn off the firewall for that particular device on your network. You can then try again and if it works, then it was probably your firewall blocking ports. You then need to figure out what ports need to be opened and set those up. Remember to disable the DMZ when you're done testing.

Go onto the Routers Config page. 10.0.0.2
Under quick start you will see a option "Encapsulation". Here you can change the router to Bridge Mode.
