good power supply brands

Antec High Current Gamer. They're also Seasonic actually, except the highest 2, which are Delta I think. Some OCZ ones (modxstream) are also good. Depends on your budget really. Corsair again (but only the rebranded Seasonics, some cheaper ones are sometimes crappy,) search the net for reviews.
 
A quick google of Huntkey, brings up enough people talking about their power supplies exploding, further research seems to point to the green star series all failing when attempting to pull the labled load.

They also implied that we were doing this on purpose (as if) and that we got a counterfeit product (as if someone would counterfeit bad products). They also said that Green Star 550 W and V-Power 550 W are different products (which is a big fat lie, as we will expose). In response to our review they posted a video on YouTube showing that V-Power 550 W works well.
* 3. They started a pressure campaign asking all people that know us (especially other manufacturers) to ask us to remove the reviews. Luckily all people they contacted are very professional and told them to take a hike (especially after seeing the videos with the power supplies exploding)."

That just so happens to be the first link I clicked, the first of many mentioning the PSU's exploding. I personally wont bother to go read much more about Huntkey. My Corsair TX650 is the doing its job very well and as advertised.

In my personal opinion, I cant ignore a bad rep like that when it comes to products Im going to pay a lot of money for...
 
Not sure what supply chain is like here since I've only purchased them oversea but Antec PSU's are absolutely fantastic, especially if you like quiet + reliability + long life.

Thing is, Huntkey is just a brand name. They aren't a manufacturer. So their PSU quality is dependent on the OEM manufacturer from which they brand their PSUs. There are some Huntkeys from x manufacturer that other brands like Corsair and Antec also buy/rebrand from. As discovered in this thread, the Huntkey X7 e.g. 1200watt is decent but the Corsair 1200watt (possibly the same PSU) has an extra 2 year warranty...

Talking about the warrantee, Im trying to find more info about the huntkey X7's.
I either cant find mention of it, or those that do claim its 1year.
This doesnt sound right to me, I thought to sell it here it HAS to be at least 2years.
If its one year then that says it all, although at the end of the day, you are paying quite a few hundred rand
more when u're buy something like a corsair with its 5yr warrentee.

links from south african dealers pls, from what I can see only the 1200w has 5yr
very few people are going to need something that powerful, even 900w is overkill for most.
500w - 900w range is whats relevent to most people.

Im most interested in the 900w because its actually in the same price region as Corsair & coolmaster's NON-Modular psu's in the 650 to 750 range which makes it rather attractive.

Dude please do youself a favour go and get yourself a Huntkey 700W power supply. It can handle a 5970 oc to 950mhz and 1300 on memory,Core I7 960 @ 4000mhz no worries 24/7 if you are on a tight budget. The X7 900W is a really good power supply i won't waste your time and you're money.

My list of power supplies i own for my various pc's
Corsair AX 1200W x 2
Antec 1200W OC edition
Antec 1000W Truepower
Silverstone 1500W
Huntkey X7 900W x 4
Huntkey X7 1200W x 2

The X7 900W matches my Antec 1000W or its even better under serious load.

X7 900W @ R1,000 flat (new) just for you if u really want this great power supply.
 
Just my opinion, call me uneducated or anything else you like... Stay the sweet hell away from Huntkey.

I have PERSONALLY seen 2 PSU's pop one after the other into a nice, thick, black puff of smoke. And no, sir, not 2x massive GPU or anything... they were being used in CELERON pc's being built for secretarial use...

First one popped in 12 minutes (Was busy installing Windows).
Second one popped after 40-something minutes (While updating drivers).
 
A bad reputation is hard to shake, and im still EXTREAMLY sceptical, but seems a few people are making their case for the hunkey x7 series (and I'll admit if I could wipe my memory clean, and just take the reviews of the x7, top it off with being modular, then stir in that price. Its very tempting, luckly for me I probly wont need to make this choice again for another year or 2. At the end of the day, its no better than a coolermaster ,corsair, or even a gigbyte. The price is its selling feature.

I'd be interested in what people who have been using one at near their rated output (minus 20% just to be safe) for over a year have to say .
(and i mean 700w to 900w ones) Since I cant even the imagine monster rig that could kill a 1200w anything.

As one dood I shall quote said
"And remember this, as some people just dont get it so it worth mentioning it all the time. A PSU is the most important parts of your PC. Dont skimp on it, as it will almost always come back to bite you in the ass. Sometimes a PSU Dying will and has taken out a whole rig before. "

I've blown a Corsair HX1000W, so just know that they aren't unbreakable

I blame Eskom though, new one's holding up pretty well =]

Dont even go there, I went through a phase 3 or 4 years back that I was totally convinced I needed to blow 60k to put up a wind-generator in my backyard, and pile up batteries in my roof.

Thankfully my homeowners association had rules against putting up such things in the area. (height restrictions)
(and they made me get rid of my pet goose :( ).

I ended renting out my house and moving to the city a few months later. So it would have been an epic waste of money of huge proportions.

A 700w Huntkey I sold to someone just blew out after a year of use, and just out of warranty. Anyways Coolermaster has some good and some terrible ranges as well, so it just depends on the exact model.
 
ashTZA give me your system specs in full and i will see if i can arrange you a Huntkey Power Supply at my cost. Also let me know where u are situated.

As i said before i am a Corsair AX 1200W believer and owner but i am dissapointed that the Huntkey X7 1200W has put itself on the same step as the Corsair....

Why? Neither engineered them, they're all bought from the same OEM manufacturers?
 
I've heard a few worrying accounts about some of the smaller (~500W) Huntkey PSUs, so they wouldn't be my first choice. Though I can't speak for the quality of the higher-rated models.
 
It always amazes me how folks can spend thousands fo rands on some serious hardware and then risk it on a cheap psu - that can just about bugger everything attached to it wiht just one zap.

Invest in a decent psu that will last - unlike gpu's and the like you don't need to upgrade it all the time - to the greatest one available.

So it's worth the extra cash - I would say.
 
Ok, so I went scratching around for info on these Huntkey PSUs
Failure number one - CPU power cable is too short. Have fun running your PC with no power to your CPU
Internals look like carp, at least when compared to a Seasonic. But to be fair there isnt really anything wrong with it. Soldering looks good too
Poor heatsink (its just a bar, no fins at all)
Output regulation is well within tolerances, even at 110% full load
Multiple 12V rail design :sick: Single rail is where its at, I will not recommend a top end PSU that is not single rail

All in all, not a great PSU, but not carp either. Would recommend several other brands long before I recommend this one, mostly because of the silly multiple 12V rails and the CPU cable being too short for many mid size towers, and almost all full size towers
 
IDOL i agree with u mate....in bad weather i could not give 2 *****S about my power supplies safety because i bought the best and it should protect my system. I have never worried about electrical surges nothing. I dont use ACP UPS's nothing just straight into wall socket. Come thunder lighting and all i will still continue to game. :)

Components only get warm when they are under load and cannot balance themselves properly to do the work load. Insuficient power.....

Archer the single rail is all just marketing stratergy. I have a single rail Silverstone 1500W and done some testes to see how much load i could apply to the 12V rails VS 1 12V rail from Huntkey and it was the same because the power supplies have got some clever circuitry in them to compensate for this load shifting. And with us now using thermal and load throttled graphics cards from both AMD and Nvidia we will go back to using "multi rail" setups so that we dont have a problems confusing the circuitry of the power supply.

@ Postman, I can't disclose that info here mate. The secret is in the power supply case :)
