I would never do that. I stand to be corrected but isn't the max towing weight for most cars 85% of the car's weight? I suppose the Golf may fall under that but I would risk buggering something up in my car... Call your ins, they always have free towing

Never heard of that. If I can easily push a 1.3 ton car I don't see why it would be a hassle to tow it. I've towed heavier vehicles than my own before.
Towing a car actually feels much lighter than driving a car with four passengers and a boot full of stuff.

I think it has something to do with the chassis - I know it states in my cars manual that it can't be used for towing at all due to possible chassis damage.

I'm not sure how the max towing mass is calculated.
On my Kia Cerato it's 1200kg braked and the vehicle only has a mass of 1242kg so that's nearly 100% of the vehicle mass.
Then take the Toyota Fortuner 3.0 D-4D 4x4 for example.
It has a vehicle mass of 2560kg but it is only rated to tow 1500kg braked.
