Google: Android didn't copy iPhone

Point 1, I agree; but fyi prior to iOS5 even developers were limited in the customization they could do to standard interface elements; with iOS 5 that has changed. Also in iOS5, they have introduced the notification centre (please no debate on copying) -- for now Apple have not allowed app developers access to put things into the notification centre, in time this will change, could be as early as the next release (the delay is because they most likely are internally trying to figure out how to give the developer's flexibility without comprising security).

What has developer limitations got to do with it? its still a iOS limitation. They want every phone to look the same, I dont, my phone is an expression of me. I am surprised they even let you change the background picture and not go Windows Phone on people and just limit you to selecting icon colors.

Point 2,3,4; It's a compromise for security -- to be honest I prefer the security of their model; and so do many other developers /media houses, .... I really don't want the equivalent of the Windows + antivirus paradigm on my phone...
Yes it unfortunately means giving away flexibility, and that's why it's good that we have a choice of platforms.

How is a Unified file system a security compromise? They let you keep one in the cloud, so why not the phone? All they needed to do is allow the applications to store files in a central place on the device. I dont what applications to share data, I just want to be able to open for example a word document with 2 different applications without the need to email it to myself or store it online.

As for other installs all they could have done is go like Sony Ericson. If you want to unlock your device you simply navigate to the website and get the full unlock. No need to go all Jailbreaking on your device which is illegal in SA I may add.

Point 5; Apple unlike Google has taken responsibility for compliance with rights, taxes, etc.
Btw so has Amazon ito their Android and media stores.
Hence Amazon and Apple's stores have been more successful in obtaining rights to content...

Yeah I guess we have to thank our government?? for that, but honestly they should just have spoken to the relevant parties and get the crap licensed it would do them a world of good. Can you imagine what a 1up it would have been for Apple if they had Games, Movies and Books(even if limited) in the South African iTunes? Not everyone use the fake information route in fact I would go so far as to say only the techsavy and their friends/family do.

But like I said before its not about defending or whatnot, its the simple 5 things that made me switch to Android.

I loved my iPhone and I still have both iPhone 4 and the original iPad, they just dont fill the gap for me, and yes Android has its problems too, but I enjoy it more even with my anti-virus in the background and frame drops.

Apple Fanboys do not require anything Apple doesn't provide until Apple provides them, then its the best feature/service/product in the world.

The outcome is good; if everybody was on the same side of the fence, then we'd either have only Android or only iOS; thankfully that's not the case. Each OS has its challenges including Android (which I'm sure we know all too well).

It's good that you are satisfied with Android -- understandably there are also those that are happy with iOS, and you should allow them that.

Unified file system sorry to say is clearly breaking the iOS security model i.e. once you allow one app to do this, then so could any app, including malware.

The legal clause you reference ito a JB does not apply for your own devices i.e. your personal data. Btw by your definition this would also apply to rooting Android.

Yes the iTunes store for SA is crap... btw the Amazon android store operates on much the same paradigm and is also restricted to the USA -- and you can't tell me the Google market place is a shiny gem (quite the contrary imo).

Personally I prefer the surety in knowing that someone has vetted the apps prior to me using i.e. there is less likelihood that I will be getting malware; btw that's the reason I primarily use the Amazon android store (and, yes I have to bypass the restrictions just like the iTunes store).

ps I really don't want to have to install an antivirus package and sacrifice performance for a perceived sense of "freedom".

Aaah here we go again... Is this what they call a fandroid? If you were not so ignorant of the conversation, you would realize that both Elimentals and myself own both Android and iOS devices.

+1

Remember 3G on the initial iPhone and all the *excuses back then? 'Who needs it!' '3G is a dying technology!' 'EDGE is quick enough' 'Apple knows the future and EDGE is it' .... then they all changed their tune.

Same with the camera on the iPad ; 'cameras are a dying technology!' I've got a real camera I prefer!' 'Who cares?'

nah ... I do believe he's right.

My two examples are actually very true and I often heard that lack of 3G and camera's was a great Apple decision for various reasons. However - when they were added later (albeit a crappy 0.7MP camera which even developers say limits them ...) everyone was 'wow! camera!'

I'm glad I don't fit into the Apple fanboi or Android fanboi club :P

Actually you're one of the worst kind, you're a fandroid stuck with Apple devices - shame:D

There is no clause in the act for own device, and yes it applies for Android rooting as well, but like I pointed out there is options in the Android world, for example Nexus or OEM supplied methods like the one from Sony Erricson.

If the Apple's Jailbreak case was held in South Africa they would have won. All that is needed is for them to lay a charge at our SAP to see people arrested for it, but seeing that this would be very very bad PR the chances of that ever happening is very slim to null, well unless you openly sell a jailbreak service, like Mr Playstation over here

I don't think you could quote Apple on this; maybe a couple of the fanboys, but who cares, buy the device you want and stop being petty by always thinking you are right and they are wrong. Just be thankful everyone doesn't drive a white BMW, wear white synthetic tights and live on jungle juice.

I beg to differ as that is a different point entirely; a business that is exploiting sales of a modification that is known to bypass media DRM i.e. allow piracy.

In the case of a JB, the onus would be to prove that the action would result in theft. Clearly not the same as the playstation example.

Ironic - as that whats the world be like if Apple had their way ;)

My iPad looks like every other iPad in the office - despite me having my own needs and wants.

So now that you have two (LOL), and as SiriS stated "Dolby's transformation into a Apple fanboi prostrated in front of the Jobs Altar is almost complete."

I have only 1 question -- when do you sell the volvo and buy the white bmw? ... btw do you care for a contact on a good set of tights (be careful the cheapies tend to ride up your a..) :D
