Google Nexus 5

Lol, I might be joining you...

Have a friend at work that likes the Nexus range and it turns out he wouldn't mind buying my N4 which mean s an easy upgrade for me.

MKBHD Review of the Nexus 5:

So it looks like there are some pro's and cons, the biggest drawbacks being the battery life, the camera and the speaker.

Everything taken into account, I'd love to have one of these. It's just a shame we won't see local availability for $350.

All the phones are the same.

Not quite: http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/170166-nexus-5-excellent-global-coverage-perplexing-lte-support

In short: the US version will have 3G support here, but not LTE on Vodacom, MTN and Telkom Mobile. Seems (from my understanding and research) that if cellC were to launch LTE on the bands they are trailing it, it should be supported.

Not sure aboute Neotel - think they might be in a supported band.

The European version should work fine on MTN and Vodacom.

Ah, my apologies. I didn't realize the N5 had different versions. I assumed it would be the same as the N4.

I can't say I'm phased about LTE, if I was downloading torrents with my phone then hell yeah I need LTE but for my usage, 3G is fine.

FYI with my N4 I get 13Mb down/3Mb up which is plenty for me.

Was my feeling too - that's why I'm not too concerned that I'm getting a US one. If the 3G support was patchy then it would be a different story.

And for the price, getting the European model just isn't worth it. Proper LTE implementation is so far off the horizon anyway.

However, Australia seem to have the global model, and it is slightly cheaper too. Hopefully the shipping isn't too exorbitant. Will let you guys know as soon as I've placed the order.

How you ordering?

How you ordering?

I plan on ordering via a VPN directly through the Play Store. A few people state that their credit cards work fine, so I'm gonna give it a shot and see.

Seems that I will be ordering a US model, which isn't really a bad thing. Shipping from Australia doesn't seem possible, from what I have found so far.

Right, so I ordered my Nexus 5, and ordered the LTE Nexus 7 for good measure :p

Was rather simple really:

  • Placed my order with PostBox Courier to receive my order number and the address.
  • Used a US VPN to access the Nexus 5 purchase screen.
  • Used my secondary Gmail account and FNB credit card to pay for it.

Not difficult at all. The total cost from Google came to $835.05 ($399 for the Nexus 5, $349 for the Nexus 7, $15.99 for the shipping and $71.06 tax). Sucks that PostBox Courier now use a California-based depot.

The Nexus 5 should ship by November 26, so I will let Gary and team know to hold back the shipping on their end, until both devices have been received and can be bundled.
