Well, it runs stock Lollipop, and it would have been the reference device for the OS, so would have the best optimisations IMO. Even in reviews I've read of the G3, they've compared the speed to the Nexus 5 and M8 (benchmark for skinned Andorid).

The G3 wasn't bad, though.

I am very impressed with the G3, so much so I am considering an LG for my upgrade later this year.

Since Samsung has ditched snapdragon chipsets for their newer phones custom ROM development will be slow. The ROM development and android upgrades for my S4 was so painfully slow that I decided to get myself the Nexus 5 for my birthday. The Gflex 2 and the G4 should both have snapdragon chipsets so there will be more custom ROMs available for them.

LG really stepped up the quality of their hardware from the Optimus G going forward, and their software from the G2. The G4 will be something special, I'm sure.

I've owned the Nexus 4, Nexus 5 and G2, and do not have a single bad thing to say about any of them- all LG made.

Details, please! I'd like to update to 5.1 without losing my data

edit: do I simply flash the zip using WUG's NexusRootToolkit?

I use TWRP recovery on my Nexus 5. If your phone is already rooted, then just download and install it from the Play Store.

Copy the zip to a folder on your phone. Boot to TRWP recovery, select Install, browse to the folder that contains the zip and then swipe to confirm flash. It will then unpack the zip, install and reboot. After that you will get the usual message about apps upgrading and you're done. No data loss.

What are you talking about? you explaining how to root?
Can you really flash 5.1 this way? How is it possible with modifications on device such a custom recovery. To my understanding you can only flash the OTA on a basically stock state.

It is not a complete image, but a series of patches to the OS. Patches in the OTA can include: bootloader, radio, system, recovery and kernel. While it's installing, the script checks the files it is patching to make sure the original files are correct. If everything is correct, the update will finish successfully. If it's not, the process will stop. That's why it is critical to make sure everything is in its "out of the box" state.

I decided not to wait for the OTA update and downloaded a pre-made zip that was created from the factory image: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95916177934539447

I flashed it using TWRP. This way you get the update without having to wipe the phone. Works a treat.

Note: The pre-made zip file was created by Tasssadar of XDA-Developers. The same dude who made MultiROM and also runs an Ubuntu Touch update server for the Nexus 5. Legend.

More info on this please, The link does not work either.

Yeah, no. The OS needs to be stock only if performing the update over the air.

The factory image was converted to a zip installer. You flash it in the same way as you would any other zip update via TRWP. F or example, when you need to update CM12 and OTA updates have not been enabled yet, updates via zip files is the only way. Here's the updated link to the zip file: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95916177934540248

Simply put, if you have stock 5.02, then root the phone, install TWRP recovery and flash the zip. Done. I use MultiROM with TWRP because I can then triple boot to stock Android, CM12 and Ubuntu Touch. If you don't plan to do that, then MultiROM is not needed, just TWRP.

hows the battery life with 5.1?
im rooted and xposed...and i hear xposed is not working on 5.1..so im waiting

So after 3 days having 5.1 I can genuinely say from my personal experience the battery has definitely improved.. alot! I get a full solid day of heavy usage that I couldn't get before.
I cant say too much about the memory leak, as it didn effect me that much before the update.

At this point the only real thing that should stop you from updating would probably be Xposed.

I easily get more than a day on 5.0.1. Wonder if 5.1 will be better for me.

Flashing Factory Image/ OTA Zip on Macbook

Is there any detailed step-by-step guide on how to flash using a Macbook?
I have downloaded all the necessary files (SDK, Factory Image, OTA Zip and even ADB) but something is just now working right. I think it's the installation of ADB as I cant get do anything via terminal, just not responding.

Thanks
