This is such BS. Sorry, no offence meant :)

When I was on Cell C, I had variying levels of signal within my place of work and at home. Example, dependant on where I sat in the office, I either had full signal or none at all.

When paying for transactions that required an OTP, I would actually leave my phone on a colleague's desk on the other side of the office, attempt the transaction, run to aforementioned desk, note the OTP, run back to my desk and input the OTP before it expired.

Yes, that is how bad Cell C was. Nevermind at home, where the connection speed would bounce from full 3G to GPRS dependant on the room I was in (and I don't have a very big place, at all).

Suffice to say- Ecco's problems are definitely network related.

I actually recall you mentioning your issues with your nexus 5 and cell c earlier in this thread. I think you responded to my issue which is basically the same. In the case i wanted to know if any of the other guys have similar issues - because for sure Cell C doesnt play nice with the Nexus 5.

I cant believe the issue that myself and my indian colleague are experiencing is anything else. We drive from different parts of JHB to work, and many time we both check and the phone doesnt have signal in the office after the commute. Reboot the phone, signal is back.

You can't call BS just because you had a different experience than I have, that is implying I'm lying about what I am experiencing. Your difference in opinion does not make mine (or yours) BS. Sorry, no offence meant.

I have never had any network specific problems with Cell C on my Nexus 5 or any other device I have owned in the past.

The reason I said that I doubt the problem is network specific (just my opinion) is due to the fact that I have the same variant of the N5 on the same network, but not the same issue. Even when I go out and about and my phone looses signal, as soon I get back to an area with coverage my phone picks up the signal and continues to function as it should without requiring a reboot.

If it is network specific then someone else might experience the exact same problem on a different mobile network depending on the area and that networks coverage or QoS in that specific area.

Yes, the solution for Ecco might be to change to a different network if that network is better where he is. In my experience Cell C is the best where I work and stay. MTN has good coverage when you get to more remote areas, when traveling MTN usually have some coverage where the others have none, but in the City their network is too busy. I find that I'll have full signal, but slow connection speed.

I didn't mean to imply that your situation was untruthful. Sorry, it's hard to convey tone over a text-based statement, I genuinely meant the first sentence with no malice, only out of frustration over the experience I had with Cell C.

You're quite fortunate that you have not had any issues with Cell C, I had some serious issues with them to the point of terminating my contracts early, simply because the network was unusable to me.

But your points above do indicate that it is a network issue- you lose signal in areas that you sometimes go out to. That is all down to the network and coverage provided by said network.

As an aside- I had the same experience with MTN. I've gone through all the networks, and so far I've been happiest with Telkom Mobile for my use. But I would always recommend that anyone looking to change networks first guage what the coverage in their most frequent areas is like via a prepaid SIM.

Cell C didn't play nice on my Nexus 5, nor did it play nice on my other devices (G2, Xperia S, S2) either. Best bet, IMO, is to get a few prepaid SIMs from the other providers and use each for a day to see which one gives you the least connectivity issues.

No harm done, thank you for clarifying your statement.

I understand that losing connectivity is coverage related, but that will happen on all networks due to the size of the country and the cost of providing 100% coverage. The problem Ecco is experiencing is that when going back into an area with coverage the phone doesn't pick up the signal again without having to reboot. I don't have that problem, my phone connects again without an issue.

That is why my diagnosis is the phone rather than the network. The network coverage is there, but the phone needs to reboot before connecting.

My logic goes like this: If your internet is not working and you fix it by restarting the computer rather than the router, the problem was with the computer and not necessarily the internet provider.

It could be that the phone does not roam well between cell towers, but it is the phone rather than the network.

I'm not trying to defend Cell C, I'm just saying the problem could be elsewhere and switching networks might not fix it.

WRT Cell C, I know of a lot of people that lose signal and then have to reboot their phone (Various devices and brands). Definitely a network error.

On MTN I get H/LTE at work and E at home.

I would suggest Vodacom in general but best would be to check some coverage maps and test with some prepaid sims first if you plan on taking out a contract.

I think it's a bit of both, considering that the Nexus 5 wasn't truly certified to work locally. Could be that the modem just doesn't have the config to reliably establish connectivity, because while I suffered on Cell C with all my devices, the Nexus 5 was particularly bad.

Agreed. While I believe that the major contributor is most likely the network, this could be device related, too. But, the easiest way to eliminate that is simply popping in a few prepaid SIMs and checking how stable the signal is.

I decided not to wait for the OTA update and downloaded a pre-made zip that was created from the factory image: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95916177934539447

I flashed it using TWRP. This way you get the update without having to wipe the phone. Works a treat.

Note: The pre-made zip file was created by Tasssadar of XDA-Developers. The same dude who made MultiROM and also runs an Ubuntu Touch update server for the Nexus 5. Legend.

Was actually going to ask if the pre-made zip was done by either Vomer or Tassadar...

It's a bit early to say, but it seems good so far. Apparently the memory leaks on the N5 have been fixed.

Details, please! I'd like to update to 5.1 without losing my data

edit: do I simply flash the zip using WUG's NexusRootToolkit?

Definitely. Still the fastest phone on Lollipop at the moment (from what I've read).
I agree the N5 is still well worth every cent.

I don't know much about the speed comparisons. Do you think it's even faster than the Nexus 6 or the Note 4? I can easily believe that the Galaxy S5 is slower because there is not much difference in spec and any difference in spec can be negated by the bloat on the Sammy.

I will run a benchmark on my wife's LG G3 tonight for interest sake, because that should be faster than the N5 (on paper at least)

Well, it runs stock Lollipop, and it would have been the reference device for the OS, so would have the best optimisations IMO. Even in reviews I've read of the G3, they've compared the speed to the Nexus 5 and M8 (benchmark for skinned Andorid).

The G3 wasn't bad, though.
