Google Nexus 5

To everyone that's using a Nexus 5... How do you do the airtime/data stuff? Are you on prepaid, or those bring your own handset contracts or what?

I'm looking at getting one in the new year, and my contract ends this month. So considering my options...

This is a nice option R169 for 100 talk minutes and 5gb data that rolls over.

sell the s3 mini for 2k , i am using this deal in my mifi atm. also sold s3 mini same day i got it :p

But you wont get lte access , nexus 5 does not so 2300mhz TDD

I would suggest that you get a Telkom Mobile contract (if you can live without the LTE and purchase a US Nexus 5), as it comes with 5Gb of data a month. The poster above mentioned that it comes with the S3 mini for R169 a month- good value I reckon.

Hmm, this is definitely a possibility. But it says:

Additional Telkom Mobile Data: 5GB (Following devices only): Nokia Lumia 920, Sony Xperia Z, iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy S4, Samsung Galaxy S4 mini, Samsung Galaxy SIII, Samsung Galaxy SIII mini, BlackBerry 9720, BlackBerry Q5, BlackBerry Q10, BlackBerry Z10, BlackBerry Curve 9360 and BlackBerry Bold 9900

I'm also considering these MTN Use Your Own deals. Just not sure whether they're contracts or not? All the others it says Rxxx pmx24, so you know it's a 2 year deal, but maybe these are month-to-month?

That clause confused me, as well. But there are a few members here, who use the data in other devices. They clarified that the data promotion is only applicable to contracts taken out with those devices.

yes data is only available on that devices, but data is linked to the sim card .

You get the data if take the smartplan 100 with one of those cellphones, you dont have to use the sim card in that device.

I currently use it in my mifi works 100% with the 5gb data i get.

Oh okay, awesome. Thing is, though, I don't really need that data. I basically jump between wifi accessible areas. It'll be useful, but I'd prefer not tying myself into a contract for stuff I don't necessarily use.

Another question: What is the situation around warranty? Does the warranty apply to imported phones? And what if something breaks, where do they fix it? Is that just a risk you guys' take?

U would have to send it back to Google to get fixed ... As for screen droppings and what not you would have to find someone to do that and would more than likely have to send that to the USA too

One if the reasons I wasn't too miffed about Google cancelling my order. Imagine it gets here and it's an out of the box failure

Incidentally for the people who prefer the LG G2 to the Nexus 5, Orange is now selling them for R5,875 a pop (which I think is quite good) - cheaper than what they sell the Nexus 5 for!!

HAs anybody gotten the OTA for the Nexus 5 yet??

Nope no OTA yet

I side loaded the 4.4.1 update last night. Apart from getting the windiws drivers to work and finding out where the backups of the phone that I made with Clockworkmod were stored it was a simple and painless process. Even kept my root (I have SuperSU paid version).

Camera looks much better but need to test further.

So, according to Amazon, my Nexus 5 has already been shipped :D so hopefully, it will land here sometime next week.

But I have a shiny new Nexus 7 to keep me occupied until then

Was there a big difference between buying it directly from Google vs buying it from Amazon ?

Cost wise? Probably R1k more buying it from Amazon, but given the workarounds that I would have had to employ to buy it from Google, perhaps the overall cost will be a lot closer.

Note that not everyone here is experiencing the problem that I had- namely a credit card that Google won't accept. So try your luck with them, first.
