Google Nexus 5

i bought an n5 through orange on thursday evening. was delivered to me the following tuesday morning. was very impressed. they used dhl and no hassles with customs
 
Anyone know if it's possible to look at a physical case for the N5 in Jhb?

No doubt. But if I had to buy from them, I would ask them the question before paying. They do not have a set way of dealing with warranties/guarantees from different suppliers. In all honesty, you would probably have better after sales backup dealing with them than importing yourself irrespective their answer.
 
So I have been informed that I can upgrade. Has anyone compared the LG G2 to the Nexus 5 personally?

I know their reviews which do that, but I'm interested in personal experience...

The professional reviews are far more reliable, and will allow you to make a more informed decision.

You won't get a N5 for an upgrade from service providers. If you want a N5, you would have to buy it from Google/Amazon/Orange/Esquire/AnyOneElse.

A mate of mine has the LG G2 - extremely happy with it
I have the N5 - extremely happy with it.

Yeah I know that...but I now will be able to go on one of those "keep-your-phone" contracts (if I decide on the N5) which are lower-priced because you not subsidising a phone.

Basically LG G2 upgrade with higher contract monthly price or buy N5 with lower contract monthly price.

I finished my contract in December, on pre-paid and gonna buy my N5 cash. Don't use the minutes or SMS's anyway, and I'm mostly on WiFi. So I have some airtime and data on hand if it's required, but it's much cheaper than having a contract.

I don't know anyone that has a G2, unfortunately. I can only vouch for the N5 as a device (outstanding, if it helps).

Wrong, you still pay subsidy for a phone. You just don't pay additional cost for an expensive phone.

Sorry what? No no no. If you go in with your OWN phone. You pay 60% less the subscription costs....So if you wanted to say get a Smart S on a No Phone deal from vodacom, i think you pay like R120pm or something. But i mean, you could always buy a phone Cash, do an upgrade to a 2gig data line for like R89pm then add on R100 calling time. You looking at around R200pm for a 2gig contract and R100 airtime with a Nexus 5 (Or any phone you wanted). Not sure where you come with this "wrong you still pay subsidy for a phone". What are you paying subsidy for a phone on? You have your OWN PAID phone...

Simple example:

Samsung Galaxy S4 mini LTE
On Smart L - R579 pm X 24months
On Prepaid the phone is R5379. That gives you R224.13 you would pay should you purchase the phone over 24 months
Deduct that from the contract price of R579 and we get R354.87. So you should pay R354.87 pm for the Smart L contract if you do not take a phone. Right??

On uChoose Smart SIM only you pay R399 per month for a contract without a phone
Where does the other R44.13 go to?

Did you see the example right above your post? I'm not saying it is not cheaper. What I am saying is you still pay a subsidy for something you don't get.

R5379 isn't the cost price (for the network provider). So the extra R44 in value they give you could easily be attributed to that. Plus they probably still make a profit on the phone itself. Just one possible explanation I would imagine. I don't have the inside track on these things so I speak under correction :).
