Google Nexus 5

So, to anyone that plans on flashing Paranoid Android (or any custom ROM, I would think)- do yourself a favour and flash TWRP as your recovery. CWM no longer has the ability to fix permissions in KitKat, which causes problems when loading the ROM itself (such as not actually wiping data).

Yet another product that Koush Doutta abandoned when he got bored with it, it seems. TWRP, on the other hand, works pretty damn well.

Differences between the D820 and D821 models? Do both work on local LTE/3G networks?

Also I've been comparing this phone with the HTC One M7, any opinions from people who have experienced both phones?

The same except for network frequencies. Compare on gsmarena.
I am certainly not impressed with LTE in SA. My wife has the Samsung S4 mini LTE. When we are in a LTE area, the download speeds are not that different. We're both on VDC. My N5 doesn't support VDC LTE. I have the 820 model. LTE is overhyped imo

I've had the 821 since November iirc, and I've never even checked to see if LTE works yet or if it's even supported by Vodacom.

Don't see the point really.

I'm in the UK at the moment on holiday. I did a bit of checking, local cash price on a brand new Nexus 5 is about 285.00 pounds. Do you think it is worth a purchase ? I currently use a Samsung Note 3. I don't see there being any advantage in going to the Nexus 5....except that Android will be stock on the Nexus - no Vodacom and Samsung crap like I have on my Note 3....and updates will be faster and direct from Google. Apart from the OS, I don't see any advantage with the Nexus...or am I wrong ?

Oh..I could claim the very high VAT back at Heathrow airport when I leave the UK to go back home - I think UK VAT is about 21 %, so that would make the cost price around 235 UK pounds ? worthwhile ?

Not worth it. Just put Cyanogenmod on your Note 3 and you'll get better than vanilla Android.

Na, you already have the Note 3. Unless you think that it is too unwieldy, keep it.

Not only is there no advantage, there are plenty of disadvantages. The camera on the N5 is nowhere near as good. The display as well, although pretty much nothing has a display like the Note 3. N5 has less Ram. Less storage. No SD card slot (still, Google? Really?). Non removable battery that's much smaller than the Note's. No S-pen.

The Nexus 5 is a great phone for the price, but there is a reason why it's half the price of a Note 3.

Thanks for all the honest replies - I just thought I might take advantage of being here in the UK and getting something that is difficult/expensive to get back in SA. But I note that the Note 3 is the preferred device :D

I am blown away by the performance/specs of my Note 3...but I thought, if uncle RPM and esteemed columnist Jan can choose the Nexus 5....and they can get any phone they want...then there has to be something magical about the phone.

I'm a VERY happy camper with my Note 3

The N5 is probably the best value for money out there and compares with the latest greatest of 2013 extremely well if not better. RPM and Jan are working on tight budgets ...

Just wanted to pay compliments to Mobilefun: I ordered a Spigen Neo Hybrid case from them when they dispatched via DHL Global. It was supposed to arrive within 15 working days max but didn't do so; when I contacted them to complain about this, they immediately and without quibble sent a replacement case via DHL Express. This arrived two days later and is now protecting my Nexus well. Well done, Mobilefun, that's great customer service!

People.

Hello. :)

I see dudes who previously owned S2's mingling here.

Advice please. I'm about to get the N5 from orange. Any one own a red 32gb model? I see they only stocking the red and white. Any differences in the feel of the cover, back etc?

Or should I bite the bullet and order the black 32GB from Jadopado?

Why not save nearly 2 grand and buy an unopened S4 on Gumtree? Install Cyanogenmod to get rid of the Samsung junk.

I can get an S4 for 3 grand???

For around R4k - sometimes a bit lower, sometimes a bit higher. Last I checked the Nexus 5 was R5.5k, and I was accounting for exchange rate increases and the increased storage capacity you were considering. Even if it cost a similar amount, the S4 is a vastly superior phone and has better support in SA.

Hmm. Fair points.

Gonna take a look at some Gumtree ads.

Thanks for this. :)
