Google to launch WhatsApp competitor: report

I am pretty happy with Telegram now and for my contacts that dont have that I still fall back to WhatsApp. Cant see myself moving over to this and trying to get people to get onto it, unless it is something really great or they push it out to all android phones and make it sign in automatically so I dont have to convince people to use it.

Another one? :wtf:

I also prefer Telegram purely because of the PC version. Unfortunately the bulk of my contacts are on Whatscr@p.

Mine too, but the people I talk to the most are now on Telegram. And then there is Tgay of course on Telegram lol

The PC version of Telegram is fantastic. Love it.

I thought Hangouts already played that role?

Hangouts is crap. What makes Whatsapp and Telegram so widely used and popular is that it uses telephone numbers in your phonebook. Dont have to ask people for usernames or pin numbers etc. I talk to only my friend in the UK on Hangouts, and have been begging him to just install WhatsApp on his new Samsung, but he is 52 and a technophobe. He does not know how to install apps. That or he is just being a typical difficult grumpy Engelsman!

In my opinion Hangouts are too over bloated to be a "instant" messenger, purely on a marketing perspective. They need something simple and easy to use, it will obviously integrate with Google Services.

When Russia cuts the internetz, Telegram will be bygones :p

I'm still trying to get my friends off of BBM.

Huh? Hangouts uses Google Contacts which should be your phonebook if you're using Android.

Whatsapp is perfect. Goodluck google :whistling:

+1

My brother & mother's Nokias both can run WhatsApp, so I could cancel my sms bundle from my contract and chat for hours.

Thank you, WhatsApp!

I haven't even bothered installing BBM on my new phone. Anyone I left behind can stay there.

Uses email address, not phone number. I have very few people emails saved in my phonebook.

I sync my contacts to my gmail contacts. Works a dream.
Like that I can send an IM, VoIP call, video call or SMS with the same app.

I hate having to carry my phone with me at all times. I can get Hangouts on my tablet when I read ebooks, or on my PC if my phone is busy charging. With WhatsApp I can only use my phone. Also, the Android Wear integration for WhatsApp is sucky. Swipe away a message notification, then get the same one again 10 minutes later. Even for muted groups. I WILL LOOK AT IT LATER, NO NEED TO WHINE AT ME.

I vastly prefer Hangouts.

That the notification comes back is on purpose, same thing if you swipe it from the notification screen on your phone. When it recontacts the server the notification will show back up, or at least that is my experience.
