Uses email address, not phone number. I have very few people emails saved in my phonebook.
I sync my contacts to my gmail contacts. Works a dream.
Like that I can send an IM, VoIP call, video call or SMS with the same app.
Agree with Nod. You are doing it wrong. With full integration of your address book in gmail, the phone becomes a tool, not the keeper of all your valuable contacts. Phone dies/get stolen, nothing is lost except the unit itself.
That the notification comes back is on purpose, same thing if you swipe it from the notification screen on your phone. When it recontacts the server the notification will show back up, or at least that is my experience.
I actually don't get this attitude. You get bombarded by advertising regardless. What does it matter if it's targeted ? When I'm discussing my plans as a master criminal I use more secure channels otherwise I don't really care if some database knows way a perv I am. It's a price I'm willing to pay for cool free stuff.Chances are Google will store all the messages you send and mine the data like crazy for data to sell you advertising. Whatsapp doesn't store the messages on their servers. No thanks, Google.

This is why Whatsapp don't have desktop client. Telegram gives me the best of both. Messages are always encrypted on the server, so you can access it from another device, there is a nice desktop client, BTW. When you lose phone, just re-download messages from the server. If you need more privacy (send account numbers, passwords, etc...), open secret chats, these messages are not stored on the server.Whatsapp doesn't store the messages on their servers. No thanks, Google.
They will be pretty soon...Chances are Google will store all the messages you send and mine the data like crazy for data to sell you advertising. Whatsapp doesn't store the messages on their servers. No thanks, Google.
Me too... more or less.I would rather get ads for Hairy Bear Muscle mags than for Cosmo so I dont mind.![]()

I hate having to carry my phone with me at all times. I can get Hangouts on my tablet when I read ebooks, or on my PC if my phone is busy charging. With WhatsApp I can only use my phone. Also, the Android Wear integration for WhatsApp is sucky. Swipe away a message notification, then get the same one again 10 minutes later. Even for muted groups. I WILL LOOK AT IT LATER, NO NEED TO WHINE AT ME.
I vastly prefer Hangouts.
I doubt they will launch an entirely new platform.. Thinking they will just make hangouts operate like whatsapp with phone numbers.
The thing I hate about whatsapp is that it doesn't have an iPad or Mac/pc version etc.. which makes the new handover between devices less useful
I now use hangouts for the free calls to the US. Otherwise it's c r a pThe last contact I had on BBM finally moved to Whatsapp a few weeks back so no more BBM thank ****
As for Hangouts. I have nfi what/how/who/why/where![]()
Telegram fixes all those issues.
Hangouts is crap. What makes Whatsapp and Telegram so widely used and popular is that it uses telephone numbers in your phonebook. Dont have to ask people for usernames or pin numbers etc. I talk to only my friend in the UK on Hangouts, and have been begging him to just install WhatsApp on his new Samsung, but he is 52 and a technophobe. He does not know how to install apps. That or he is just being a typical difficult grumpy Engelsman!![]()
