Google to launch WhatsApp competitor: report

Uses email address, not phone number. I have very few people emails saved in my phonebook.

Agree with Nod. You are doing it wrong. With full integration of your address book in gmail, the phone becomes a tool, not the keeper of all your valuable contacts. Phone dies/get stolen, nothing is lost except the unit itself.

I sync my contacts to my gmail contacts. Works a dream.
Like that I can send an IM, VoIP call, video call or SMS with the same app.

My contacts are synced to google. But I just dont use email that much.

That the notification comes back is on purpose, same thing if you swipe it from the notification screen on your phone. When it recontacts the server the notification will show back up, or at least that is my experience.

Ah, so they purposefully do it to irritate me. Gotcha. Solution was easy, though. Disable notifications to my AW watch for WhatsApp. Blissfull silence, and longer battery life. Win/Win.

Chances are Google will store all the messages you send and mine the data like crazy for data to sell you advertising. Whatsapp doesn't store the messages on their servers. No thanks, Google.

I actually don't get this attitude. You get bombarded by advertising regardless. What does it matter if it's targeted ? When I'm discussing my plans as a master criminal I use more secure channels otherwise I don't really care if some database knows way a perv I am. It's a price I'm willing to pay for cool free stuff.

I would rather get ads for Hairy Bear Muscle mags than for Cosmo so I dont mind. :D

This is why Whatsapp don't have desktop client. Telegram gives me the best of both. Messages are always encrypted on the server, so you can access it from another device, there is a nice desktop client, BTW. When you lose phone, just re-download messages from the server. If you need more privacy (send account numbers, passwords, etc...), open secret chats, these messages are not stored on the server.

I doubt they will launch an entirely new platform.. Thinking they will just make hangouts operate like whatsapp with phone numbers.

The thing I hate about whatsapp is that it doesn't have an iPad or Mac/pc version etc.. which makes the new handover between devices less useful

I hate having to carry my phone with me at all times. I can get Hangouts on my tablet when I read ebooks, or on my PC if my phone is busy charging. With WhatsApp I can only use my phone. Also, the Android Wear integration for WhatsApp is sucky. Swipe away a message notification, then get the same one again 10 minutes later. Even for muted groups. I WILL LOOK AT IT LATER, NO NEED TO WHINE AT ME.

I vastly prefer Hangouts.

Telegram fixes all those issues.

Chances are their app will have no legs just like Wechat

Yes, so I heard. However, I found that once I install a IM, I can't ever get rid of it again. Because I have some friends I don't want to lose contact with that refuses to use anything else. Example: YIM. I already run Hangouts. It does what I want. And none of my friends has actually asked me to install Telegrams as sole point of contact to them.

Hangouts is crap. What makes Whatsapp and Telegram so widely used and popular is that it uses telephone numbers in your phonebook. Dont have to ask people for usernames or pin numbers etc. I talk to only my friend in the UK on Hangouts, and have been begging him to just install WhatsApp on his new Samsung, but he is 52 and a technophobe. He does not know how to install apps. That or he is just being a typical difficult grumpy Engelsman!

And I love Hangouts for the exact same reason that it uses email addresses I already have.

Who uses phone numbers in this day and age? I personally dislike it because then people can phone me and it's harder to ignore them.

Have not once asked for a username for a single person.

But best part about Hangouts is that it's truly multiplatform unlike WhatsApp.

Love hangouts. Multiplatform and the chrome app works great. No **** desktop app that I have to install like Skype etc. They just need to add file sharing but G drive takes care of that anyway. The new calling feature is great and the quality is crystal clear.

Telegram = doesn't have the masses whatsapp has.

Whatsapp has mass market appeal.

Hangouts integrates well with my existing google account/services & contacts.

Skype because VoIP etc was always done on here.. But lately I use it lesser as family all on iMessage

Wechat.. Don't really use, use it with strangers I don't give out numbers to haha I want to remove it tho.

So telegram as yet another app is like meh.. Personally I think the itu needs to step in and define a universal interconnect protocol between them so I can drop 1/2 of them haha
