Google TV

Google believes it has come up with the technology to unite Web surfing with channel surfing on televisions.

I am waiting for google to setup a TV station on the net that anyone with an internet connection can use. Think DSTV but by google over the internet, i bet you will get far better value than any broadcaster here could offer.

LOL its like a big company orgy ... Sony will suck and blow Intel Google wil make the porno and Logitech will use the remote to you know what him/her self in the ass . . .

Nothing but hype here. Ask the German's what comes from sticking your fingers into every pie.

Google already dominates the internet and in the last year has
become a major player in the cellphone market. Now, it has eyes on
the world's televisions.

The internet search giant on Thursday unveiled a new service
called Google TV that aims to simplify the often bewildering
prospect of finding programmes to watch and record on hundreds of
cable and satellite channels. It also will allow users to search
programming on the internet.

The service will be incorporated into televisions and Blu-ray
players made by Sony and set-top boxes from Logitech and will
launch in time for the vital holiday season, Google announced at
its developer conference. The company declined to detail the retail
cost of the new device.

Google chief executive Eric Schmidt acknowledged the many
challenges of melding television and the internet, which has been
tried before by companies such as Microsoft and Apple without
sparking much enthusiasm from consumers.

"It's much harder to marry a 50-year-old technology and a brand-
new technology than those of us from the brand-new technology
industry thought," he said.

The Google service will run on the same Android operating system
that has quickly gained a major segment of the smartphone market,
and also will use the Chrome browser, which is rapidly becoming the
browser of choice among savvy internet users.

"As other technologies have evolved and changed, TV has remained
the same," Rishi Chandra, Google's project leader, told 5,000
developers gathered for the conference. "Video should be consumed
on the biggest, best and brightest screen in the house, and that is
a TV."
The service aims to turn the TV into a regular internet
terminal, allowing people to access services like Facebook, Twitter
or any internet site while they are watching programmes on a split
screen.

"The Web is unlimited, and now your TV is unlimited as well,"
Chandra said.

I think google is skynet. Taking over the world slowly....

Completely, however, we all know that Google are making a presence in SA - what better way to enter this market by taking on and TopTV DSTV online... of course, buying the TV for most people here is a big barrier to entry. Sure, we still have terrible line-speeds, however Telkom are supposedly announcing improvements, new IPC costing, IP-Streaming... and who know if anything else over the coming months.

I'm not a big Google fan, despite using most of their services, but as with Microsoft you have a business emerge through and then the others catch up... if it's better but doesn't cost you your freedom then I say let's go with it!

Well we might not see it in SA too soon, but if it works, this could be a wonderful step in the progression of technology. I love the concept, and I can't wait to see how it develops, especially since the participants are major manufacturers and service providers who are know for quality and innovation!

Well some tv's are already internet ready...samsung 8 range...
I've got a pc hooked up to my LCD which is what google tv is really...
media portal has a built in browers, built in youtube viewer, built in email msn facebook....
nothing new really, you can have this for about 11 grand (lcd + pc) now plus mweb on demand and your set.
but you have to be tech savvy...the only con.

Try ever, by the time we have our bandwidth restrictions and telco's sorted this will be defunct by the new skynet...lol

yeah.. though the name might be something different.. prolly something like .. Lord Google .. :P
