Google's maps go indoors

Seems like a great feature. Hope to see it on Android phones in S.A. soon.

I like the idea but I'm assuming its pretty much a standard map as there is no way to get gps in a mall? Still great to basically have a layout of the place though and overlay that with specials on offer in stores and you got a great thing.

It can even detect which floor you are on, so I am assuming they are placing beacons in the malls from which you will triangulate. Similar to using wifi access points to trangulate you if gps is not available.

It will help me in Clearwater Mall. Been there about 5 times, got lost each time :O

Nope, not just a map. They actually show you where you are, accurate within a few meter they claim. They can even show you what floor you are on. Speculation is that they use WIFI triangulation to determine your position.

It's US and Japan only at this stage. They're crowdsourcing the info, letting users upload their own maps.

PS A link to the source article would have been useful, then people can RTFA for themselves :

It will be using a combination of WIFI triangulation, GSM Triangulation, and if you can get it GPS as well...

I really like the idea, think its a step in the right direction... Google maps is already a lifesaver for me, as is their Navigation.. so indoor maps would just give me another reason to keep using it.

Meanwhile, bing maps still haven't completed their street view
