GoPro vs Camcorder

Why did you get one at all?

Because Christmas…

I'm sure I'll find a use for it when the PSL and SuperRugby kicks off in the new year but until then I'm not sure what to do with it.

Image quality of the GoPro Session is only about as good as the Hero 2. The 3/3+/4 use Sony CMOS. The Session uses an Aptina CMOS like the Hero 2 but the Hero 2's was 11MP vs 8MP for the Session. GoPro have managed to fit quite a lot in a tiny package but it's insanely overpriced.

Anyone know of a way to control the GoPro via a laptop instead of a phone?

You need to use the non-waterproof case to get better sound, otherwise it will be muffled.

Probably why the sound on the Session is fairly decent - no external case to get in the way.

Sadly it doesn't support an external microphone otherwise I would have had one already.
I'm not too bothered - so far I've been using it mostly for time lapses - in fact I took 12,000 uninspiring pics the other day of the back of a soccer net… :o

Nothing beats GoPro

The TomTom Bandit and Sony action cameras are not far behind and it's not an easy black and white comparison any more.
In some areas they're better than the GoPro and visa versa.

Example:
GoPro = best image quality, poor battery life and 64GB SD card limit. It leads the pack at 4K at 30fps. No GPS or sensors for telemetry.
Sony = built in image stabilization, decent all rounder.
TomTom = long battery life, IPX7 water proof out of the box or 50 meters with just a dive lens cover. No dive case required. 4K at 15fps. 200GB micro SD cards supported. Internal GPS and sensors for telemetry overlay (heart rate, speed, altitude, location).

Each has it's pro's and con's so I don't agree with the "Nothing beats GoPro" statement.
I'll see what the GoPro Hero 5 offers and then choose between it and the TomTom Bandit.
If the GoPro 5 offers 8K resolution and only a 30 minute battery life then I'll give it a skip. 2.7K 30 fps is all I want.

Yeah for me it would go on my helmet so the Shutter would be perfect size wise, but then if I was inclined to talk to myself while riding it needs an external mic as the wind noise would just destroy it.
