Hi;

Anyone experiencing this on GS4? Battery barely lasting after lunch. Battery app shows that GPSD is using the power. All GPS and locations settings tuned off. Even hard reset the phone. and did not install any new apps.

All the forums are pointing to issues on the cell network. See forum below as well.

CellC Rep, can we investigate.?

Hey! A cellc rep exists! I mentioned this on the cellc twitter account but they were not helpful. I see people have complained to cellc tech support but they had no idea either. Its now a few days that the issue is going on and it's starting to get annoying. I wonder if cellc will compensate us for the inconvenience caused.

Find any app that uses some sort of location service and disable it.

My GPS and locatiopn services is off. I have the standard ROM and hard reset phone with only whatsapp installed.....

Can't do more than that?

Just checked a colleague at work, identical phone, same software version and he has no issue (he has tons of apps and his GPS was on!) Difference, he is on Vodacom!!

I have escalated this. We will investigate. *DM*

Hi There Cell C Representative,

Please let us know to where this problem was escalated as none of the call centres are aware of this problem.

To the Rest of the people having this problem

Please contact cell c data support on 084 1555 555 and log a case to get the problem resolved ASAP

So here is the proof...

Same phone different networks. I swapped out the Sim card from Cellc to telkom. Phone setup identically. Charged on both occasions to 90% to reset the battery indicator and left phone on for just over 50 min each time. Both Sim cards had HSDPA data connection.

First screen shot is with Telkom and second with Cellc. GPSD certainly draining battery on Cellc...

So I tried to log a fault as u asked.....It would have been easier trying to land on the moon....

They indicated that it is my phone and not the network and did not log the issue. i must take my phone to a cellc store (spoke with Nombulelo in technical).

Any chance it could be a faulty sim...? but then again how can so many people experience a faulty sim at the same time!

Just spoke with another person on cell with same phone as me. Started experiencing this exact issue last week/weekend....

CellC please can you get someone from your network to contact us. I have PM you. They will not log the issue and provide me a reference number.

I got exactly the same problem with my s5. I have had it for a month now and it was fine the first 3 weeks now it's becoming a problem. I am also with cell c and yesterday had my phone at Samsung they reinstalled the software but it is still a high battery use. What can we do please. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Can you check your battery usage and see what percentage the GPSD app is at and report here.

I wonder if it is not this Free Whatsapp data that has caused the issue, because it smack bang ties in with that from a timing perspective.

Here is a nice headline for RPM:

Cellc Free Whatsapp draining batteries on users phones :D

At one stage gpsd was running at 37% and the screen was at 22%

Agreed, trying to explain this to the support is not an easy task.
I managed to get them to log a case and got a reference number.

Try and direct them to the two threads that explain the problem.
The support consultant should Google "Mybroadband GPSD" and then read through the problem.

So glad someone has linked this to Cell C, I have tried everything to locate what is causing gpsd to kill my battery life with no luck.

Looks like I will just port my number, I can not take the Cell C experience anymore.

There is an easy fix guys, set your mobile network to 2g, it's not a great fix but it works. I have this problem on Vodacom, while my wife on Telkom doesn't have it at all. Setting mobile network to 2g seems to stop it for now and I can still get whatsapps etc, yes you will top out at Edge speeds but on VC network I wasn't getting more than that anyway.

My phone has been set to 2g from this morning. GPSD still consuming battery!

Okay another check if the following go into your application manager, running apps check if Remote Controls is running try killing that. This also sometimes can hold GPSD. Or switch to 2g and reboot that's what I did two months ago and haven't had this problem since.

I have this exact same problem. GS5 on Cell C.
Has anyone managed to find the root cause yet?

I have been wandering around work trying to find some sort of link, and so far I have found two other people using galaxy phones, not all GS5, but all Samsung, on Cell C with exactly the same problem.
My wife also as a GS5 with the same problem.
It looked like it started this weekend past, Friday I believe.

No one on any other service provider or any other type of phone (at this stage non-Samsung, but I think it may be Android related) seems to have this issue.
