GPSD Battery Drain on cell Network

Also getting this.

I'm done with Cell C. I'm still on contract, but I'm over it. I'm going to pay R150 per month for a vodacom sim.

I should have done this ages ago. Cell C's network is just too bad.

Does anyone know what will happen if I port my current Cell C contract number to Vodacom?

I will gladly escalate any other network challenges your are having. Please PM me more details. *DM*

I don't want change networks I have had good service from cell c the last 6 years I would just like this to be sorted I am now only running my s5 on 2g and the battery is like it was 3 weeks ago if you could pm me and email address Mr rep I will send you to screen shots showing the difference in battery usage. Thanks

Yesterday after 8 hours on normal network it was on 25% today on 2g it's been off off charge for 13 hours and on 63% and gpsd is not running in the background at all

So I reverted the back to normal settings this morning. The drain seems to have slowed down and the GPSD app not appearing on top of the list. Will monitor .....

Any response from Samsung yet?

To me, this sounds like a software issue. No matter what response GPSD does or does not get from the network, it shouldn't keep retrying until the battery is flat. It should fail gracefully.

By some miracle, gpsd isn't appearing in my battery stats this morning on my GS4 or GS5. Both phones on CellC. Standard settings. Using 3G and wifi. Location services off.

Emailed Samsung yesterday. No response as yet.

I agree with you 50%, this is both a network and software problem.
Something on the network caused the service to get stuck in a loop and the service is not handling the problem and not exiting correctly.

If it was only software it would have happened from the day the phones or updates were launched on ALL the networks.

Which is why the statement that it is a result of the last update is not accurate as the update was a month ago and the problem would have started then.
In my opinion it is both the last update and the whatsapp promotion which caused this.

I agree 100% with your 50% agreement.....:D

Yes, GPSD has disappeared. So what was changed by CellC on the network.?

I agree it is 2 issues. One was on the network, the other is software related. After the last 200MB update to firmware, I noticed a slightly higher drain in battery but not that significant. The GPSD has really killed battery life.

I got a call from Samsung yesterday that said I must take my phone in to service centre as it could be the motherboard or they need to reinstall software !!!!

Another call from them seem to indicate the aware of the issue.

Lets monitor today and hopefully Cellc responds with what they have fixed.

From today the GPS on my S2 is also working again when using the CellC sim.

Then my good sir we are in agreement.

The problem on my side appears to be gone.
I have received word from the Cell C representative that they have made changes.
The specifics have not been given.

Changes have been made indeed. I will update the thread with more details. *DM*

I am on Vodacom myself and so is a colleague and we both experienced it. The only networks I've not see it on are Telkom mobile and MTN :-( so porting to VC more than likely won't solve the issue.

So how do we in future get through the call centre agents with issues like this....when they don't believe its the network and we have to resort to other methods. She was adamant its my phone......

That is a $1m question.
Luckily this kind of thing does not happen too often.

I managed to get a problem logged (Not sure if it helped) by being adamant that they read through the forum and not hanging up until they logged a problem.

Also sent the links for the threads to cellc via their website(Not sure if it helped)
https://www.cellc.co.za/write-us

So in short, start a thread get an agreement that it is a network problem, and force them to pay attention.

I have just spoken to a CellC rep in the tech department.
I logged the problem with her, and she has since phoned me back several times with updates, and finally just now to confirm that CellC were doing some testing on the network, and that this was the cause of the high GPSD process use.
They ceased the testing on Wednesday evening (22 Oct), hence the problem disappearing from Thursday morning.
On comments above, it may have been SW playing a roll, but the cause was the network, not the SW. I have too many friends with identical phones, not on CellC (MTN and Vodacom) with no issues, and also completely different phones on CellC with the same problem...
I also would like to know more details, but this is where my info ends.
The Rep I spoke to was most helpful.
