GPSD Battery Drain on cell Network

I've been experiencing this same problem on my SG4 since Sunday night. gpsd using 40% + of my battery.

The kicker is that I'm on the Vodacom network.

CellC fixed the issue. We got to the engineers on their network quickly and they fixed the issue draining batteries caused by their network :D

With Vodacom....you going to have to find someone in corporate who will maybe listen to you, then the instruction (only when they are convinced there is an issue) will go through all the layers of the company until the engineers get it.....

I've flashed Cyanogenmod on my phone now, so I'm hoping that will fix some of the other issues I've been experiencing with Cell C's network. But yeah, the excessive battery drain seems to be gone.

Cell C can confirm that a setting that was activated on a limited portion of our RAN infrastructure on 17 October affected certain handsets (predominantly those running Android 4.4.2) to draw more power from the battery, resulting in a more rapid depletion of the battery life on these handsets. The issue was subsequently resolved.

Thanks for the feedback.

So the networks are gathering data as to your location using GPS rather than triangulation.
While a combination of your location and signal strength could be a good tool to help with network coverage it would also raise some questions about privacy.
You can never 100% disable your location services on stock roms, there is always a way for background processes to enable it again.

Even though this is fixed on Cellc, my battery has not returned to pre "GPSD" consumption levels..... :(

My wife has an GS4 on Cell-C and after the upgrade to 4.4.2, gpsd started killing the battery.
Now according to the author of gpsd, it's not gpsd that's to blame but some other app that is polling gpsd too often.
See "No, GPSD is not the battery-killer on your Android!"
http://esr.ibiblio.org/?p=4886
"On the Galaxy SIII, the ‘app’ may actually be the “Remote Location Service” in the vendor firmware; you can’t remove it, but you can disable it through Settings."

The other high usage was "Android System" - which I suspect is calling gpsd.
I tried disabling location services, gps, etc - but by 4pm the phone was at 9%.

Having location services off did not help.
What did work, was changing Location/Mode "Location Method" to "Power Saving"
Now even with GPS on/off/location servers on/off the battery is fine - 60% by 4pm.

You can still turn on the GPS and get high accuracy when needed.
This setting seems to affect what happens when the GPS is off.

Greetings all. This is my first post so excuse me if I make some stupid mistakes.

Anyway, I believe I might have stumbled onto the solution for this GPSD problem. The GPSD battery drain hit me about a week ago and frustrated the living daylights out of me. As I usually do with most problems, I Googled it, but this time there seemed to be no real answer to the problem. Most people recommended that you should restore to factory setting blabla... Anyway, as frustrated as I was, I started reading on how to root and load customs ROMS etc... NOTHING SOLVED THE PROBLEM!

So, I eventually just stared at the battery graph, watching a my battery slowly drained in front of my eyes. This was when I noticed something very peculiar, my Wi-Fi seemed to be switched on according to the battery graph. I went to look if my Wi-Fi was switched on, but it was disabled. Strange I thought, this was supposed to be ad GPS related issue... By now every possible service has been switched off, most apps have been disabled or removed so it seemed very suspicious.

Long story short. I went to the Settings Menu > Wi-Fi > Pressed Menu Button > Advanced. Here I found that "Scanning always available" was enabled. Once I disabled this setting, my GPSD problem was solved.

I have no idea how it got activated, probably this CellC issue you are reporting on...

I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 on CellC, now rooted with Lidriod running.

Hope this may help everyone with this GPSD issue.

Thought it was the new 4.2.2. firmware... So I loaded a custom firmware (prism barebone) ... WOW.. all the crap and bloat gone.. now my battery lasts 2 days and sometimes I can go up to 3 days... I would say that is pretty amazing for a samsung galaxy S4 - never had this kind of battery life.

Interesting. Can you please provide me with the link to where you sourced your cfw download. Functionality wise how much did you lose as compared to the stock ? Thanks

Hi there.

My Galaxy S3 (Android 4.1.2) still shows the GPSD using about 24% battery. So do I still need to change anything on the phone?

I also use Prism Barebones, can get it here. I've noticed no functionality loss compared to stock.

I'm on the Vodacrap network and I still experience high battery drain (Jan Vermulen!); The only solution that does work for me is switching to GSM only and then rebooting my phone.

We have a anomaly. I have a S4 on MTN and my friend got a S3 on Vodacom. both of us got the GPSD issue. we have tried all solutions suggested across different forums. After our own investigations we have found that if we force stop WhatsApp, no more GPSD issue. however as soon as a message received it turns on the service again.

Anyone had the same?

I used to have this problem but it is gone now. I've flashed my phone to Cyanogenmod 11 though, which I think is part of the reason. Goodbye bloatware!

Plus I get to upgrade to Android 5.0 much sooner - as early as today if I wanted to try out a beta version of Cyanogenmod 12.

I am also having this issue now. Battery drains within 5 hours and GPSD on 40% and sometimes higher. I am on MTN with a S4.

I suspect it was after the 4.2.2 firmware update done a week ago. I also have tried every possible suggestion mentioned and nothing has worked up to now.

Anyone else on MTN?

I've been experiencing this heavily for the last two days. I'm on an S4 on Android 4.4.2 and I've been told by a Samsung service center that this is the latest build for S4 on MTN. Please see my attached screenshot. My dad is also on an S4 and has had the same problem, but not as bad as mine.

My screen time is about 1:50 and I charged the phone to 95% before unplugging it when i went to sleep.

I am also experiencing severe battery drain with GPSD, around 40% plus today.
Also experienced it late last year in Pretoria area. The problem "resolved itself" - thanks Cell C....
On Cell C in PE area.
