Ok Secunda people,

I am basically fed up with talking to one ISP.

http://greencom.co.za/rates/

Greencom is another company similar to the 123Net and in my opinion offering better rates - R875 for 25mbps FTW!

Lets get those sign ups going in the same fashion we did for 123Net. Once we get their attention we will have much better prospects of success. Lets send the link to family and friends in the area.

My message to them:" Secunda needs Fibre! Secunda has 40 000 odd highly educated and highly paid residents. Please come and save us from 3G data!"

you forgot to say secunda has the 2nd highest bandwidth usage in Mpumalanga on an old copper telkom network

FUP on greencom

The User acknowledges that Greencom is lawfully required to intercept communications #F* THAT

Share information concerning the incident with other Internet access providers, or publish the information, and/or make available the users' details to law enforcement agencies #F* THAT

Charge the offending parties for administrative costs as well as for machine and human time lost due to the incident #F* THAT

And the worst of all after advertising uncapped unshaped

The action that Greencom may take includes, but is not limited to:

1.7.1 This policy applies to and will be enforced for intended and unintended (e.g., viruses, worms, malicious code, or otherwise unknown causes) prohibited usage.

1.7.2 Limiting throughput

1.7.3 Preventing or limiting service through specific ports or communication protocols; and/or

1.7.4 Complete termination of service to customers who grossly abuse the network through improper or excessive usage.

Greencom can suck it.. don't even think about getting this ball rolling unless you want big brother probing your network traffic's anus

and if you use a VPN they can stop your service regardless if you pay for it or not. no thanks I AM OUT

There must be other options out there if "Greencom" & "123net" isn't it for us in Secunda. If enough interest is shown (like we have) then there must be other companies that will be more than willing to provide fibre for Secunda area. Any ideas?

Incorrect.. it's an open access fiber network.
1) there is no network.
2) as ISPs we have been in touch. When pigs fly and this network becomes operational, it will be closed access.
3) You guys realise you're funding them with your contracts, right? So you'd better be damn sure you agree with their financial models. Which from a cursory glance make me go nope, nope ,nope...

that's not the point. it was stated that you "won't be able to" which is incorrect. not whether it has been agreed upon by other ISPs
So where are these magic interconnects? You realise ISPs have approached them about this, right?

An idea would be to build it yourselves! if you hungry enough the hardest part is trenching & funding. Its been done in other parts of the world...go for it :) Ill help

The network has not been built yet.

Correct. But people have signed contracts, which are being used to "secure" funding, for a model that involves non-recovery of capex, and free uptake on the bottom-end of the market. Any banker would request one to please go back to finish grade 4 mathematics before approving this. Any "funder" the same...
