I just saw three Gripens fly in formation over Cape Town, I guess for tomorrow's SONA. It made me think of the days when we still had airshows at Ysterplaat. I used to go to all of them, it was so cool to see those jets fly. I guess these days airshows are a thing of the past?

Cape town only had AAD airshows from 2006 - 2010 when the AAD was held at Ysterplaat. From 2011 onwards it was moved back to Pretoria after Waterkloof AFB upgrades were completed.

Want an airshow in the Cape? Then you have to go to the Overberg.

Hardly... If it's anything like armed forces day in durbs from 2 yrs ago it was damned impressive...esp the night barrage into the sea... I could hear it from 25kms away...

The weather over Cape Town is much better today (Sun 17th), with blue skies and unlimited visibility.

Just saw two Hawk trainers flying low and fast towards False Bay. Interesting that the SAAF versions have under-wing pods.

Gripens in the dark with afterburners letting off flares
Also, some land based vehicle launched about 10 big ass rockets which lit up the sky and wrecked absolute mayhem about 5km away.
