GW vs. WoW

The games are completely different, so comparing them is like comparing apples and oranges. If I was you...I'd play both xD I do. WoW fills the gap in the social aspect and eats up alot of time, so I go all hardcore on it. Guild Wars, on the other hand, is completely skill based meaning level and items means hardly a thing, which is amazing for PvP. Guild Wars you can also just jump into whenever you want, and updates are usually released on a weekly basis. It can satisfy the hardcore player too.

Im not interested in items,i want extensive character growth

WoW is ALL about gear and items, period. You'll hit level 70 quite easily and never actually used any of your abilities [i.e. alot of classes got a "healer" build which is a horrible build to level with for obvious reasons...so only at lvl 70 you start using it]. So at lvl 70 you still end up changing your talent/specs [think diablo and resetting those talent trees you put points into] and relearning to play the char.

However at the end the day, once you hit lvl 70 there's no more "character growth" . You can tinker with your talent/build somewhat but ultimately you'll be going for better gear.

Question: How Long Does a Character Last In both Games? ie: Max Char Level? I mean like Neverwinter Nights 2 was Gr8 but then you get level 20 and then you go awww ... my character is maxed out?

In GW, 20th is max...but that's relatively near the beginning of the game. Once you're at 20th, and you have all your ability points, you use your skill in choosing and using skills and heroes, and in tracking down and capturing good elite skills. It's very flexible in that regard.

With respect to the MMORPG aspect: I don't want to play with thousands of other people around. I want to the quests myself, or with a couple of friends on my team. It's nice to see other players in towns, but I don't want them out in the world with me.

WoW!

Wow is better - I have tried both. The question is whether or not you want to pay the subscription, but I do believe it's worth it. It's three years down the line and I am still logging onto WoW every night. That says something...

I enjoy both, when wow gets boring i get involved in GW, and visa versa

I like GW, to me WOW is spam... spam... spam.. and try not to get bullied and killed by other players, I did not like the pve/pvp mix.

GW' pvp is great specialy when you get into RA & AB I don't care much for TA & HA all they do all day is "ping" "ping" :p

The pve part is even better, with hero's/henchies I have managed to complete Nightfall and Prophecies with very little help from other people, not that I did not want any it was just a little fun to see how far I could go. (okay needed help with second last mission in NF :) )

As for character levels so what if the cap's lvl 20 I have over 2 million XP points on my primary character and I supppose will rack up alot more when attaning more titles :)

There is just so much to do in GW it's maaad from farming to titles to pvp :D man I wish my GW was working....

2 completely different and unrelated games, they just both happen to me mmorpg.

I can't believe there is even a comparison. I have played both and I personally must admit that WoW offers more but they are not the same games and should not be compared.

i think Gw is better because it is free, :p

Thats like saying you prefer watching SABC over DSTV because it's free :p

I started WoW this week, been playing guild wars on and off since 06. I haven't gotten very far since I got bored by the character interaction in GW.

WoW is very attractive although the GW characters look muuuuch more refined and better in their kits. Not as blocky as WoW. If they had a GW ranger in WoW i wouldn't look back.

I prefer the open playing world of WoW as opposed to GW where you go through loading screens every 5mins.

The fact that you can choose a race and then a class is also much cooler than choosing a class specific race as you do in GW.

All in all, I'd have to say GW was amazing fun - and can be at any time since it's free... WoW on the otherhand will be thoroughly enjoyed as long as you play lots.

What it boils down to is this:

If you're not going to play that much , get guild wars. It's amazing!

If you can afford subscription and/or be able to play enough each month to warrant the subscription, then WoW will rock your socks off!

It's also alot more interesting to see real life characters running around past you be they friend of foe. In that sense ... I haven't come across it yet myself, but I hear the okes on TS go mad when they're battling someone. It's soooo much better fighting hordes of real people vs NPC's

Unless you form a group, Guild Wars is pretty much a single player game against the computer with very little player-to-player interaction (aside from trade posts)

Lastly, I've found that strangers in WoW are much friendlier than in GW. I've battled monsters in the forest and a random oke runs past and klaps me with a health shield of sorts and then goes on his merry way.

Whichever you go for, you'll still enjoy!

Actually, not...

A fairer comparison would be between two satellite providers who had exactly the same number of channels, but different channels. The one being free and the other not. It boils down to preference. What channels are you interested in? Are specific channels worth paying for when the other company provides just as good, if not better channels of the same type? Does the content you're interested in exist only in one company's offering? :)

+1 :)

GW has my vote because of the need for skills not for grinding :)

oooo and the pvp is the best :D

Skills are best in GW get a Great build and you can pretty much take on anything :)
Just try, Shadow stepping a control point in AB and using Djinn's haste, Fire burst and Star burst and see what happens! :p

Good point Lydon

I've only played WoW for a week now and i'm starting to see all the differences. I loved GW, but WoW grips me more...

as you said, it all boils down to preference. :)

Noooo! we lost another!! :p

I haven't played WoW but I was pretty good at one stage with GW. The one thing that put me off WoW and the one gripe I have is the monthly subscriptions.

Firstly I understand that this monthly fee goes into more development and therefore a better outcome for the gamers...however could they not have thought of a better system? I pay some dollars just for a months access...then I go away one weekend to the 'berg...the other weekend I'm studying..and the other weekend the family wants me to be around etc etc etc....I have wasted an entire months sub for what?

I have paid x amount for the game already in any case so it is a tad frustrating to have to pay a monthly to look at the darn thing now and then :(

Secondly I don't have a credit card...I don't really want one...so now am I stuck? How do I pay for the monthly? No one in my family trusts their credit details online so that won't help :(:(

Thirdly, like GW, why couldn't WoW developers only charge for add-ons and items and leave the rest who simply want to play it as is? This would have IMO created a much larger fan base to what is suprisingly pretty big anyway.

Like I said though, I have never played WoW so my facts could be off...but aren't these typical barriers that most potential newcomers would perceive anyway? Like Vendetta and Savage2 which I believe is possible on Linux....what games these seem to be!!!! yet it's a monthly sub....no thanks :( I try long and hard just to save up for the hardware and game + Internet Cap and Telkom as it is.
