Gym question for 49 yo

So you ignore the median and reference the outliers instead?

No, I was saying they are given as they are easy examples.
Are you intentionally ignoring that BMI is less accurate than other methods and that is actually what we are talking about?
Also, most places who use BMI dont actually take any other factors except height, weight. Discovery did this to me for ages, momentum has done this, many GP's have done this.

But hey, Im just a "gym bro", what do I know...I can tell you what I know, that the BMI measurement, whichever way you use it, doesnt work on me, and I am not an extreme example. I know it misclassifies me constantly when used by doctors and insurance companies. I know it doesnt work on my dad, who doesnt work out at all, I know it didnt work on my mom, who drank too much and instead was thin but had very little muscle mass.

But feel free to keep dismissing the fact that BMI, is less accurate than other methods, and that even you, used it instantly without using the other recommended measurements you punt here, to possibly misclassify a forum member as immediately obese.

I doubt you are going to change your mind, so we can agree to disagree.

No, I'm saying BMI is an indicator and general measurement. Other methods will not change the BMI by much once they are applied. You will still be obese or overweight if you present with an initial BMI of 30.

Earlier BMI was the be all and end all of measuring body fat according to you. After BMI was proved wrong with "freaks" you moved the goal posts.

BMI (body mass index), which is based on the height and weight of a person, is an inaccurate measure of body fat content and does not take into account muscle mass, bone density, overall body composition, and racial and sex differences, say researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania.

Where did I say that? I even said it will vary if you are an ecto, endo or mesomorph and a doctor is required to get to the final measurement. But that still means that with an initial BMI of 30 you will never be ideal weight no matter what your build is.

This is the part that is outdated and inadequate and arbitrary for anyone who even works out a little bit. Maybe it works as a loose and lazy guideline for a population that is inactive (i.e. IF!!!!! you are inactive and sedentary then you actually need to be extra skinny to compensate and let your heart chill). But if you are active in any way this model is the least useful of all models available and really and truly shouldn't be used.

It leads you to a place of claiming that someone like @syntax with a 12% body fat percentage and BMI of 29 is "overweight" and thus "less healthy" than somebody with a body fat percentage of 30% and a BMI of 24. That is just nonsense. 12% body fat is incredibly skinny and lean and... healthy. Especially for the heart and organs.

Generally you are well researched on topics you enter, and you are on this, but your research is old and outdated and obsolete here. I suggest you be a little more open on this topic to new knowledge.

I copied this from the running thread but I have been consistent for most of the year other than the beginning of the year when I had my accident.

"Last week I played squash on monday, a 8km at 4.45 on Tues was at my limit, speed repeats on Wed just under 10km, 7km at 6:30 with my wife on thursday, 15km on Sat at 6min/km which was a constant pace up and downhills, played a game of paddle later that day and on Sunday I did a 80km cycle at 25.5km/hour which was the group speed."

My height is 175cm and weight is 78kg which puts me in the "overweight" category on BMI which I find pretty ridiculous. Only when I am at the end of ultra marathon training do I get to to 75/76kg's which squeaks me into "healthy" BMI and I actually look sickly. I also almost entirely eat healthy bar 3-5 times a month.

So I take BMI with a pinch of salt, although I will say when I was heavy 110kgs a few years back or even if I was 10kg's heavier than I am now I would and did battle with my health. Back, hip, neck pain which many of the guys at work complain about and are often going to some sort of doctor/physio/chiro etc that I now avoid.

Also get your self a good pair of knee sleeves. Your knees will thank you.

You still have time to delete your hurtful truth-spewing.

OP hasn't seen it because OP has been down and out for 37 hours (and counting) after the latest gym session . . .

Update: It's been over 52 hours by now and still no word. Thoughts and prayers for @getafix33 who was probably taken from the gym straight to hospital . . .

Been there, done that twice. Ever heard of a spontaneous pneumothorax??

I'm actually trying to find a pic of me in matric where I weighed a 73kgs.

Post where I said that on this thread?

So the court case Tim Noakes won is already outdated then?

Haven't read the thread but I'd say don't overdo the exercise and watch your heart.

It's seldom caused by exercise and mainly occurs at rest. Under 40 is a risk group as are tall and thin persons. Hence my query to the OP who is 49, has a BMI of 30 and cannot be tall and thin due to that.

You have a BMI of 30 then and aren't in the great shape you think you are. You're on the border between overweight and obese:

Your max ideal weight is around 75 kg:

Bullschit Mass Index

When people start talking about this, I start listening to other things.
