Halo 3 graphics

Its not surprising that my posts have made people want to buy the xbox,
as I have never been afraid of saying what a great machine it is, that it has a wonderful live experience and tons of great games.
I hope they are all enjoying them thoroughly, good for them.

All I know is that I am happy with my ps3, infact It has exceeded my expectations immensly.
Do you remember my first ever post on this forum?
I came here asking which system to buy, I wanted the ps3 but I was scared of the R6500 price tag, you will also remember that I was worried about settling. All in all I am glad I have a ps3 over an xbox, whether I won it or not is irrevelant, as many of you know I was pretty much on my way to the shop when I recieved the call that I had won.
I am more than happy with my console and I look forward to all the great releases to come as well as the long and blossoming life ahead of my prefered console.

Peace Out

I see letters and words but all I read is boooohooooo I can't play Halo3 on my paperweight PS3 so I will just troll and trash the game.:p

mwahhhhhhhh mommy I want to play Halo 3 so bad, boohooo

dude, no reply required, because all your posts just show the same thing over and over and over again, which is, once again in case you missed it:

mwahhhhhhhh mommy I want to play Halo 3 so bad, boohooo

Tan, and there's me thinking we were actually having a fairly reasonable conversation, and you go get all aggro . . . *sigh*

I'm not trying to convince you otherwise, I'm not denying the technical details, I'm not trying to convince anyone that it is 'native' 720p, only that when the signal is upscaled from 640p to 720p, you'd be very hard pressed to notice the difference. I guess I'm just getting too technical as to why I think this is all a non issue. In short:

1. Game plays great
2. Game looks really great, but not the benchmark some were thinking it would be.

I guess what I was trying to emphasis is that I think you/your boet are doing yourselfs a disservice by writing it off for a few of the niggles before experiencing what is really great about the game. Campaign co-op, MP online, Forge. etc. (And the oh so satisfying crack of a rifle butt across the back of someone's head :D)

That's about it.

Aggro? no.. I'm grown, more like sticking to the facts and proving your false information, period. At least you followed my advice on sticking to praising your title on its gameplay, which is opinion. I do not argue opinion but try to keep to facts and argue facts... I was dealing with facts only. This is my final entry on this halo graphics subject as there is no more to add. cheers

I wont lie, Im a little scared of speaking honestly ;)

Please read through the whole thing, I know its long, but I think there are a few good things in there.

I am currently playing RFoM, Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Motorstrom, i.e. the games I got free with the machine :D

My Thoughts:
RFoM: Brilliant! I really have been pleasantly surprised by this game, the storyline, gameplay and graphics have all been a great surprise.
I havent yet finished it, but I suspect that I am close to the end now.
The thing I love most about this game this something that was described by most critics to be a cheap gimmick. That is having to shake the control using the sixaxis to get rid of the aliens that have gripped you, I just think it sums up the feeling and atmosphere of the game perfectly, In a moment of sheer terror and panic you shake that thing like a madman as if the chimerian alien is really biting your ass. Awesome.
I have really really been enjoying this title online, highly addictive and I was again surprised by the lack of lag, even on international servers. I know many say that the lag is merely covered up, but damn it really seems lag free to me.

Motorstorm: Again I was surprised graphically by this game.
This was actually the first game I ever played on ps3 and was disapointed when I walked away from the instore machine. Turns out they, as many others do, had the ps3 hooked up to a SD TV. This really is a shocking trend my retailers for both the xbox and ps3 and if retailers could get it right next gen sales would probably be looking a whole lot better.
I havent really played much of this game, but its pretty fun from what I have played, although the explosive crashes can get a bit much as sometimes you seem to explode for little or no reason causing you to loose the race. The game seems to offer enough content and the recent updates on the psn def lend to the longevity of the title. Also gave this one a try online and I am pleased to report it runs very smoothly and getting into a game is simple enough :) The one thing thats missing is multiplayer though, finding a game that the missus is into is hard enough, why o why did they leave off multiplayer support.

NGS: Not sure about this one really, It was fun enough in the begining but I feel like its getting a little repetitive now. Maybe its just that its a pretty tough game though and as a result feels like a constant trial. Looks decent considering its a original xbox port. Maybe Im just not the hack n slash gamer!

Games that are available that Im dying for: GRAW 2, Oblivion, HS, FIFA08, Skate, and Sega Rally.

Wow I took so long to type that out that someone was able to butt in an ruin things, but I will ignore that silly remark as I want this to actually be a fun place to be.

@Tan365 - Bungie's explanation on the 640p issue :

http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=84469

Summary :

Bungie has responded to claims that Halo 3 doesn't run in a high-definition resolution by saying saying it's "practically impossible to discern the difference".

The developer confirmed the lower 1152 x 640 resolution on its website, but went on to clarify that it used two frame buffers to create its final image - an unorthodox technique used to improve dynamic lighting range. Obviously.

"This ability to display a full range of HDR, combined with our advanced lighting, material and postprocessing engine, gives our scenes, large and small, a compelling, convincing and ultimately 'real' feeling, and at a steady and smooth frame rate, which in the end was far more important to us than the ability to display a few extra pixels," reckons Bungie.

"In fact, if you do a comparison shot between the native 1152x640 image and the scaled 1280x720, it's practically impossible to discern the difference. We would ignore it entirely were it not for the Internet's propensity for drama where none exists.

"In fact the reason we haven't mentioned this before in weekly updates, is the simple fact that it would have distracted conversation away from more important aspects of the game, and given tinfoil hats some new gristle to chew on as they catalogued their toenail clippings."

So from a developers point of view its worth it, and thats a fact. ;)

@abev - Still playing 1 year old games? Ouch.

Iwojima re-enlightened us of the Bungie response.

Iwojima

Response from Bungie re: resolution. Take it as you will:
Quote:
One item making the interwebs rounds this week was the scandalous revelation that Halo 3 runs at "640p" which isn't even technically a resolution. However, the interweb detectives did notice that Halo 3's vertical resolution, when captured from a frame buffer, is indeed 640 pixels. So what gives? Did we short change you 80 pixels?

Naturally it's more complicated than that. In fact, you could argue we gave you 1280 pixels of vertical resolution, since Halo 3 uses not one, but two frame buffers - both of which render at 1152x640 pixels. The reason we chose this slightly unorthodox resolution and this very complex use of two buffers is simple enough to see - lighting. We wanted to preserve as much dynamic range as possible - so we use one for the high dynamic range and one for the low dynamic range values. Both are combined to create the finished on screen image.

This ability to display a full range of HDR, combined with our advanced lighting, material and postprocessing engine, gives our scenes, large and small, a compelling, convincing and ultimately "real" feeling, and at a steady and smooth frame rate, which in the end was far more important to us than the ability to display a few extra pixels. Making this decision simpler still is the fact that the 360 scales the "almost-720p" image effortlessly all the way up to 1080p if you so desire.

In fact, if you do a comparison shot between the native 1152x640 image and the scaled 1280x720, it's practically impossible to discern the difference. We would ignore it entirely were it not for the internet's propensity for drama where none exists. In fact the reason we haven't mentioned this before in weekly updates, is the simple fact that it would have distracted conversation away from more important aspects of the game, and given tinfoil hats some new gristle to chew on as they catalogued their toenail clippings

Right, not sure how I missed that

Resisting the urge to tell you to go f*** yourself: What's with the attitude Tan365? Clearly you are here to inflame the situation if your response to my repeating something (accidentally) is to become defensive. Take a deep breath...we're not all out to get you.

Jeeeepppuuzzzzz Useless ... twilight zone? Go read pg4 of this thread please. I thought i was done with this H3 graphics ... there's no more to say. I mean Iwojima even went as far as to edit in how he stopped himself from telling me to "go eff myself."

Please people... read thoroughly coz this happens way too many times in this forum. thank u.

I'm out.

RFoM: Brilliant! I really have been pleasantly surprised by this game, the storyline, gameplay and graphics have all been a great surprise.
RFoM is definitely one PS3 game that I am very keen on. In general I prefer FPS campaigns to multiplay and he genre etc really looks cool. And after all the moaning I am really keen to run amok in a certain copyright cathedral ;) Not so keen on shake the controler thing though.

My only fear now is that the multiplatform releases for the ps3 arnt dragged down by the xbox, wether its power, graphics or storage related!
Well at the moment the PS3s power remains unproven so I guess XBox fans could be saying that they hope future cross platform games aren't dragged down by the PS3. At the moment all released cross platfrom titles seem to perform better on the XBox (before anyone takes that as a dig at the PS3, it seems to me that the PS3 is the slightly more powerful machine, but again, hampered by it's unorthodox architecure).

Anyhow, I think we should all be worried that future cross platform releases will be hampered by the WII. ;)

....it can never be that simple, there is always gonna be that one person from which ever side of the war
Which is something we can ill afford seeing how small the SA gaming community is. I have aways been proud at how much better our community is than say the US one. So in the interests of peace I for one will undertake not to do any needless PS3 bashing. No matter how tempted I may be. I will also try ignore PS3 fanboi trolling, but thats much harder.

I make no promises about the WII though. I really hate it! (yes I know I'm the only one on the planet.)

As to Halo III graphics? they really are very good. Not as good as Gears or Bioshock, but nevertheless, good. I don't know if they we rendered in 635p by a orphaned lesbian ninja's in a sweatshop in lower mongolia then beta encapsulated in preperation for upscaling or whatever, but they simply are good. Guess I'll trust my eyes rather than some technical discussion by guys sitting around counting pixels instead of looking at the screen. I find it odd that someone who wanted the game will decide not to buy it because he read a technical detail on how the graphics are rendered instead of just going and looking at them. If you look at the graphics and decide you don't like them because of bright pink aliens, thats fair enough. But to decide that they are bad because of a white paper despite what they look like is just silly.

P.S. Hmmmm maybe the haters should get Jack Thompson to go after Halo 3 as it clearly promotes gays. I mean Shocking Pink aliens? This is a more blatant attack on family values than the Teletubies. Master Chief may as well be wearing tights and drinking bottled water.

i dont think any of you guys here are old enough to play HALO, or RFOM, judging by this thread. no wonder great games like manhunt 2 is gonna get cencored :P

Ill say it again the "shake" aspect in RFOM is ACE!!

To Useless: I think Tag365, pretty much proved what you are all about. This post has moved beyond the flame war and is noa a diginfied discussion!
Oh and ps my games arnt a year old I only got them two weeks ago :p

To Gouged Eye, I would seriously recommend RFoM, I really do think its one of the better games I have ever played.

I feel you used my quote
My only fear now is that the multiplatform releases for the ps3 arnt dragged down by the xbox, wether its power, graphics or storage related!
a little out of context, as it was origianly in reference to a post by tan365 on how someone felt the xbox has reached its peak.
One thing I would like to comment on though is that the cross platform games are definately not as bad now as the first few ports and some of the later have been widely regarded as better on ps3, albeit a couple months later.

Ps that water bottle comment is ace

Haven't been following that closely. I do know that Oblivion (one of my favourites) is supposedly significantly better on PS3. Better graphics, faster loading and extra content. But I already bought that on PC and XBox. Another platform would just be silly.

Must admit I stole / borrowed that from an all time clasic movie "Heathers".

My bad, didnt have time to browse through the older pages when I got home coz all I expected was abev's trolling anyhow. :p

My aplogies Tan365, there's just too much to catch up on these threads if you are absent for more than 1 hour.

@abev - you can pick on me as much as you like seeing you cant afford a proper PS3 game which isnt at least 1 year old. ;)

Coming Oct 19 I will be playing HL2 Episode 2 on my XBOX ... PS3 owners will have to wait a few weeks while EA still figures out how to port the game to the crappy console (and guess why the new GTA got delayed till 2008) ... and considering the stellar job EA did on Madden for the PS3 don't get your hopes up :).

All these new releases are killing me! I was just given a copy of Halo 3 yesterday and now I find out its only 17 days until HL2?

:D

Do you want to play year-old games like a PS3 owner ???.

Call of Duty 4 is dropping 4th Nov :).

I finished Halo 3 already ... still busy with BioShock ... stood in line during midnight at BT Games to pick it up and played the first level before getting ready for work.

Amazing what 3 hours of sleep does to you and so I crashed on Saterday morning ... was supposed to babysit the kids and my wife came from the shops to find me on the bed snoring :).

So now you're telling me I've only got about a month until CoD4? Not helping there tibby.dude - not helping at all! :p

:D

And dont forget TF2 in the Orange Box will be the next online mayhem game of note ( after CoD 4's MP of course ).

There's just way too much in our gaming bags, this weekend we'll hopefully get PGR4 as well! :D

They are porting Orange Box to the WII? And how does this affect the PS3 guys??

;) :)

Guys, seriously lets leave the PS3 alone. We can praise the XBox and it's Games Deluge without jeering at the ugly step sister. Otherwise these forums could get real ugly.

To Doobiwan and Gavin, Now can you guys see why I dont feel like I am the problem on this site, After I tried to turn this thread for the better there have been 5 or 6 irrational and completely unfounded knocks against both myself and the ps3. Sad really

Oh sorry Useless I forgot that you are my bank manager and that you have intimate knowledge of my financial situation, That has gotta be one of the stupid comments ever made on this site.

To tibby its pure speculation and flame bait that GTA was delayed due to the ps3 and there are just as many stories pointing fingers at the xbox as the problem, so lets not even go there.

Cant wait for COD4 either :D was it our lovable gavin that speculated that the ps3 version is gonna be better?

err now I feel uncomfortable, I get called many names on this forum but lovable ain't normally one of them :o

Anyway I may have reported on something like that but I can't find anything...

I have been lucky enough to be given a demo of COD4 single player and I have to say it looks absolutely amazing, the graphics are incredible and the gameplay is intense...

A truly immersive experience... I cannot wait ;)
