My Hard Drive decided to stop working this morning. Spins up fine, does not make any clanking noises, but does not get picked up by the BIOS. Ive tried connecting it to another machine, same result !

Im hoping its the controller..? !!! Any ideas if this is the cause?

Its a Seagate 500GB 7200.11
Part Number : 98X154-303

Anyone have a controller I could test it with ???
Any help would really be appreciated

Tx

Ed

1. Return drive under warranty.
2. Install new drive.
3. Restore from backup.
4. Sorted. :)

Famous lasts words...I still need some data that wasnt backed up, so feeling a little desperate.

Thanks GUYS

Thanks all for your help. Im going to attempt the fix. Hope it works out , will post results on here in the next few days..!!

Thanks a million for all your help and input!!!

After many hours ... and I mean many hours of trial and error.. I have managed to get all my data back . Ponder ...!! Youre the man, thanks for the suggestion, I really really appreciate it.
Must admit, that while doing this I think I had to check everystep like 10 times......really nerve racking stuff!!! Thanks man!!!

Well done Scape2k, good to hear you got sorted.

It's much more fun than making backups, hey. ;)

Scape2k, is your drive back in commission permanently using that fix, or are you holding out for a new drive altogether now?

there is no need to get a new drive....

there was actually nothing wrong with the drive to start with. Once the drive is released from its BSY state, and the firmware is updated, all is fixed.

dont even bother RMA'ing your drive

darn. I've disposed of two drives with similar problems...both seagates. but my options were driving out to friggin milnerton to have them "fix" it. Is this solution even on the seagate website? Coz believe me I did what I could do get my data back. Lost years of photos and documents.
