Correct me if I am wrong, but all of them are 512GB, with the 480gb variant having more GB allocated for housekeeping than the 500gb variant?

Also, did the 480/500/512 SSDs not break through the R900 barrier recently? Think it was on loot for like R860/880?
You can get the Mushkin versions for under R1000. But I had lot's of problems with that brand in the past.

Maybe on special you will pick up the WD for under R900.

It's this which makes cloning and raid a schlep. Before buying one must check if the real sizes are the same.

Yea, staying away from those Mushkins. It seems I saw a kingston 480gb at loot for R861, now out of stock. See rebeltech has them for R999. Raru has a adata su630 480gb for R764 - not linking them as I do not trust them.

I ordered a lot from Raru this year alone and had no issues. I don't think you will have issues with an SSD if you buy from them. Their delivery times are better than Takealot :p

Geewiz also have them for a good price.

You dont actually get 20gb extra, they all same size differently advertising. Same with 240gb and 256gb.

Yes raw NAND is same size but formatted capacities still vary according to over-provisioning being enforced or not.

Looking for an external drive that I can connect to an Ethernet port. I'm guessing that a Synology is overkill for this? Trying to go as simple as possible.

A power over Ethernet one will be perfect.

Please post here if you get something. If you dont, check out the new Raspberry pi 4. It has dedicated Gigabit ethernet and USB3 now, so will be perfect for this. There are also 1,2,4 GB models to choose from.

The RasPi 4 has cooling issues though. So get a heatsink / fan. There are also other SBCs which could work - banana pi has built in SATA I think, as do some Odroid varieties. Rock64 might also work. The problem with all of these things is that they're not really plug and play, you have to fiddle.

In general you can't get a simple SATA/Ethernet adapter. Probably the easiest thing to do would be to check if your router has a USB port, many of them can share a USB drive on a network.

WD also make a "MyCloud" product which works okay, performance is really good but the web interface is annoying IMO. It depends on your exact use case I guess.

You're gonna fiddle regardless. Get a Pi and choose your poison i.t.o. customised OS that does exactly what you require. I'd recommend Nextcloud even though I have no idea what you want to use it for. But if you're saying Synology or WD Mycloud, this would give you similar functionality, probably more.

Synology is probably the best (i.e. most polished) alternative, but also the most expensive. So depends what your budget is I guess.
