Each to their own to decide on what they value but I don't think saying that they're overpriced is right - since you're paying for that additional software support. Chinese phones are great for what they are, good hardware with good enough software, that can turn into very good software if you go the custom OS route which isn't for everyone.

But in terms of cost to us, due to the exchange rate risk, shipping costs, additional sales margins, and bullshit taxes we pay in SA yeah we're getting ripped off if you had to do a 1:1 cost conversion to USD.

It's just a phone. I wonder what "software support" would justify an Apple premium over Android phones. The way they have been copying each other premium phones are pretty much alike. It's just that some people are still hung over old cliches about the superiority of iOS over Android.

iOS 13 supports iPhone 6S which was released in 2015

Then look at for instance huawei and xiaomi which are chinese and has great phones (I'm personally a xiaomi fan) and you will not see such major increases in their flagship phones from year to year. The new xioami mi 10 released in the last week has actually got 5 cameras at the back for a total of 108 MP and will cost you only ~$700

I'm rocking a mi 9 I picked up new for around 5k, definitely grabbing a 10 once the price has dropped. One of the few brands that still has decent value for money.

Now the question is why Apple can but other OEM (Samsung, et al.) manufacturers can't just directly support software updates for devices they supply...
 
Apple even has their own edge cache they let ISPs/networks use to provide their content the way Netflix does with theirs, but for all Apple services: https://cache.edge.apple/

This costs $$$ to do.

I just received my redmi note 8 plus for just under R5k. Any pointers or tweeks recommended?

Probably multiple device fragmentation. Also the newer device always get's the flashier OS.

So artificially segmenting their old and new, beyond just hardware? Whatever the reason might be, that's what I see as the "Apple tax" benefit I get with my devices.

Probably, it is silly to be honest. Even Nokia is slowing down updates on it's older flagships like my 8, they had a two year update plan.
Just found a possible reason, apparently Google requires a million dollars per version of Android to the OEMs.
 
R390 a good price for this battery after the R150 discount?

Where do you plan to use it? Most 1/2/3 kva UPS needs a 12v 7ah/8ah/9ah. That battery wont fit in such a case unless you hook it up with the ups case open.

But yeah not a bad price after the discount.

Not using it in a UPS. Found another one that's even cheaper

Yeah problem is all batteries are not created equal. Most of the time trial and error or else speak to somebody that has abought a specific brand before.

I learned that the hard way with UPS batteries after buying from a big china mall in JHB. I then started dealing with a specific supplier in midrand that supply quality 9ah batteries for replacing my old UPS batteries.

Also learned never to go for the cheapest, I see the second battery you linked only has half the warranty of the other.

Noted, I ordered 1 of these so will see how it goes. Willing to sacrifice the R300 if it's crap :D

Deltec seems to be a decent "budget" brand from what I've read but can't find much info on Five Star.

Exchange rate already tanked by that time. Since then premium prices have just gone up but only for certain imported goods. Tells me there's price gouging going on.
