Rather future proof with 550-650W. The price difference at the lower end is hardly enough to warrant being stuck later on.
 
Not an expert but numerous people have told me not to skimp on the PSU and get one that is bronze rated or better

This depends on how much you care about what you pay for electricity.

I Googled for so long last night looking for something, the Redragon Yama at Takealot is probably the best I could find, everything else is out of stock, has blue switches, which I don't want or cost 2.5k+.

I owned a yama about a year or so ago. If I remember correctly, ended up selling it for like R500 bucks. Looking at how expensive it's gone makes me really regret. Will probably wait for black Friday for something good to pop up.

The Edifier R1700BT is currently R2799 from Takealot. Anyone have these and what are your thoughts? I'm weighing this up against the R1280DB. I see that the R1280DB has more connectivity options than the R1700BT.

Judging by the fact that it has a 5v port and a cable, more than likely yes. But it's normal usb so plug it into the TVs USB port.

I'm still playing mine in and will probably do a review early next week after listening to them side by side with the other speakers and headphones I have.
So far I can say that they are pretty good and a bit smaller than I expected them to be. Instrument separation is good, and I've noticed some new details in some songs. When doing my side to side comparison I'll find out if it was my mind playing tricks or not.

This video helped me choose the R1700BT over the R1280DB:

I still need to do a proper side by side comparison with my headphones and logitech Z5500s. So far I can only say that they are definitely better in every single way than my JBL Charge (1 and 2) portable speakers which they replaced on PC speaker duty. Considering the price difference, and that they are completely different product, it really should come at no surprise.

I expect my Z5500s to be better for movies and games and these to be better for music, but still need to do a comparison. The Z623s probably have a similar sound profile than the Z5500s, but I haven't heard them.

Some negatives:
The cable between the two speakers of the R1700BT is proprietary, and about 3m long.
The power cable is about kettle plug thickness and size, but it isn't interchangeable. It is about 1.2m long I think, which is actually just slightly too short for my needs.
They are loud enough, but even at max volume you can still hear yourself speak.

At that price, buy it!
