Depends on what features you use. For 80-90% of users it is just fine.

Better. There are very few things openoffice can't do and it has everything 95% of ms office users would need

Doesnt always integrate well with MS Office products.

This is a problem if people you collaborate with on a document dont use openoffice too and you have to convert to MSoffice

Only docx can become a minor problem (which is the purpose of the useless format anyway), you can have Openoffice use .doc and xls as default if you wish
