Can anyone recommend a cheapish (not more than R3000) laptop? My mom wants to get one for my father for Christmas, he only browses the net, checks emails, watches youtube videos and skypes so it doesn't need to be super fast...

For R3000 you're really scraping the bottom of the bin in terms of specs and quality, but a budget is a budget. Best is to just check out the current IC, HFC etc specials till you spot something you like. IC is a good place to go look at notebooks to get an idea of size, keyboard layout etc. so when you spot something at your price point you can pull the trigger quickly (not that you have many days left!).

Personally I wouldn't settle for something with less than a Core i3, but you'll only find them from R4k+

Edit: Actually if he's just checking mails and not having to type up many, something like a Nexus 7 would tick all the boxes.

Edit2: Esquire special on entry level HP: http://www.esquire.co.za/specials/2012_12_19Special.html

Then buy a nexus 7. Unless you're doing hardcore word, excel, a tablet is going to be much nicer bang for that buck.
