Our company has an unwritten policy that any new PC/laptop will be 'upgraded' to XP from Vista and have IE6 or Firefox installed - no IE7.

We run a lot of web-based solutions which experience problems under Vista and IE7 (believe me we have tested it with all possible configurations and patches).

It will propably be another year at least before we even consider spending the time and money retesting Vista and IE7 - hopefully after SP1 prooved to fix these issues.

My older hardware like printer and scanner's drivers I didn't have to worry about since they where already on Vista, guess this might not be true for some 'smaller' brands.

My mother bought a notebook with Vista. The Lexmark printer she had was not supported and would not be so she had to toss it.

To be honest, there are not major differences between vista and XP, certainly not enough to occupy the amount of time that has been spent on development.

That to me is the biggest problem. I can't see any reason why I must run Vista. It's even more expensive then XP.

At first, vista was on notice. i was considering installing ubuntu, then making a plan for Photoshop and the Exchange server we have at work. Now, just as MS likes, inertia has got the better of me, and I'll stick with Vista.

You should have run that stuff in a VM. There is also an Exchange connector for Linux.

I've never used OSX so I'll just have to take your word for it:D
Best not to take my word for it in this case - I have never tried Mac OSX, actually I wouldn't mind trying it, what I posted earlier was purely a light-hearted dig at Mac OSX.

AFAIK, Mac OSX is also a UNIX derivative just like Linux, hence the cousin reference :).

Ummm sounds like a classic instance of PEBKAC there.

100%, my kubuntu, formats, installs and boots into the login in under 10 min. Then my bootup is about half that of my xp partition.

@bwana, no offence taken re your Linux comments, we all know that Mac OSX is the gay cousin of Linux :p :D.

Haahaha, yeah, its based on BSD, the wannabe linux OS ;) *puts on his fire suite*

If you're saying that OsX has a certain style, grace, and panache that Linux lacks then I would wholeheartedly agree. I guess it would be fair then to liken linux to that ugly flea bitten castrated mongrel at the pound that no one really wants to adopt and if they do its only out of pity. :p

LOL, ironically there is more chance of Linux being widely adopted than OSX, considering that OSX is essentially closed-source and not free to download - as far as I can tell, whereas Linux distros are free and open source.

PS: I have edited my original post :p :D.

There's nothing ironic about it. Come to think of it I'm surprised Linux hasn't been more widely adopted considering it is free. Are they having problems even giving it away?

PS - I've edited my earlier post too. :p ;) :D

LOL, yes it seems there is some uptake-resistance from the PEBKAC-brigade :D.

Style...mac os and style? BWHAHAHA! riiiiiight. So let me get this right.. you are paying for something that you should have gotten for free? hehe... riiiight. The OS`s are very similar, and have a lot of the same stuff under the hood... I can make my linux OS look exactly like a MAC, but that would be too boring for me.

Very easy to blame Microsoft.... the hardware was made before the software (Vista) (in most cases)... Therefore its the software makers responsibility to make sure that everything is compatible.

Its like all the car tyre manufacturers making a new car tyre made of concrete and blaming the roads for not being made of rubber.... the tyres must be made to suit the road that its clients use.. not vice versa!

Its still not Microsoft's responsibility to make drivers for every other manufacturers. Its up to the Manufacturers to also come to the table and help MS create drivers that work with Vista. Microsoft have Generic drivers for alot of hardware, but its impossible to expect them to have drivers for every single peace of hardware that's out there, and that's why its the manufacturer's problem entirely, and not MS's.

There has been lots of drama eg: Creative Labs
Lots of the older cards are just not supported in Vista, Creative will not write drivers for Vista, Why, Because the cards are getting old, this isnt MS's Fault now too is it ??? These companies want you to purchase newer hardware, they're businesses after all!.

So yes, Its very easy to blame MS because that's the product that's infront of you, and if it don't work, blame that... yea very easy... and most ignorant people will not think about the other factors and just cry foul because its just that simple, and most people are just not tech savvy enough!.

I have 4 pc's, all running vista here, (2x Quads, and 2x HT3Ghz) and they all work like a dream, no driver problems, printers are working, bluetooth is working, and i hardly ever EVER reboot unless a program requires me too, My pc's stay on all the time!, and infact since i purchased my copies of Ultimate on Launch day, i have not ever had to re-installed, and i've never had a bluescreen with Vista.

I'd lie if i say it has no bugs, but i've managed get to understand them, and fix them with little effort!.

So if you're a Linux Die hard fan that's willing to put up with Ubuntu and the lines of scripts etc, or a Mac Fanatic that's hell bent on proving MS is stealing Apple's idea, too bad!. I'm happy those OS's work for you! Vista works for me, and when MS releases something better than Vista, I'll be there, oh yes, I'll gladly spend the money getting my system up to spec!

Its a little petty to bitch and moan that Vista doesnt run properly on your 1.7 but Ubuntu does A,B,C just as good blah blah blah... Stay with Ubuntu! If you're happy with it don't buy that new Quad Core or AMD, you cling onto your 10 year old 1.7ghz pc!...

XP boys... Yea XP chugs ahead very nicely, Brilliant peace of software, it works on almost everything from a P2 onwards... If you don't like the Bling in Vista, stick with XP, infact, switch the Graphical enhancements (the few that is there in XP) off, you clearly like basic (NT) look, and that works for you. Infact you can do the same with Vista, switch off the Bling!

My 2c worth!.

I think for better or worse the majority of computer users want a simple solution that works out of the box.

Of all the times i've tried Linux, it was just not worth the mission trying to get things to work!. I'm not saying i wasnt impressed with it, It was actually, looks very nice, but I just can't find my way around the damn OS. You have to download things to make common tasks work - ARggg...

Multimonitor was just impossible! And getting applications installed and finding them to run them again later was just not worth my frustration. I've actually given Ubuntu and Kubuntu a fair amount of chance to dazzle me especially seeing Beryl in action some time ago. but then you bump your head with all the things you'd expect to just work, that doesnt... No Game compatability, the file format is Greek to me, the Help forums needs help themselves, and as much as i'm a tech savvy kinda guy, Ubuntu and Kubuntu made me feel like i required a PHD in Linux just to get her off the ground. Its all about First Impressions!.

I know very little people who actually use Linux, and hats off to those that actually get along with it, and the times where i have asked for help, they have either shlurred out a vocabulary much different to MS's or they avoided me, maybe because Linux is really that hard for newbies!.

If Linux can come up with a way to be user friendly (without taking away the technical bits that older users are familiar with) and sort out various issues on a first run basis, and easier navigation around the OS, and less command line crap that some people don't want to hassle with, Then I'll give it a good go - because its Free!.

Right now, I'd rather fork out and pay for MS and its various incarnations because they've got the balance between technical and user friendliness just right!

Clearly then, you're windows-savvy, rather than tech-savvy. Linux does things differently to windows, seems like you're expecting it to be windows.

@ Abe: (missed your comments earlier): Yeah, I could run a VM or use some alternative hack but it is easier to run things in Vista and, like I said, inertia got the better of me.

I wonder if you have used OS X for more than a few minutes at an Apple store?

The closest I've come to a MAC is a Mac theme a colleague put on an Xp machine at work. Unfortunately he also disabled the screen saver causing a screen persistence problem on the lcd monitor:p

I read somewhere that VISTA is

And now you do.. people "read somewhere". I don't see what all the bugginess is honestly, there are a few problems, but really the main issue is drivers and compatability.

Really the fuss is that people hate MS, it wouldn't matter what OS you used. Just imagine Microsoft release the current Linux tommorow, do you have any idea how mad peope would be going because of the compatability, no games, "ease of use" etc... :p
