Lets all show the finger to MS and support freeware and the Mark Shuttleworth movement that is known as Ubuntu Linux and Beryl. You dont need much experience with Linux. I had none a few weeks ago and i could get it running on a Celeron 2.4GHz with 512 RAM and an FX5200. It even looks better than windows and you can run just about any windows program (even photoshop) with the "wine" application. Getting new programs is a piece of cake as well.
Check out these vids. Experiencing the cube and working with it was enough satisfaction for getting it started. With the speed at which Ubuntu is being developed, i think ill through my Windows CD's away in a few months time.

Clearly then, you're windows-savvy, rather than tech-savvy. Linux does things differently to windows, seems like you're expecting it to be windows.

@ Abe: (missed your comments earlier): Yeah, I could run a VM or use some alternative hack but it is easier to run things in Vista and, like I said, inertia got the better of me.

Yea perhaps i'm expecting it to be like windows, but its not really the point, Linux may work differently, but it still remains not user friendly and a mission to get anything to work, whereas windows doesnt really have this problem, things just work with minor effort!.

How long have you been using windows? All that time you've been learning how windows wants to do things. Linux does things differently. Is it easier to go online, find an .exe download it and install it, or is it easier to open synaptic and tell it what to install? No doubt, you'll say its easier to go through the multiple steps required to install something on windows, because thats what you're familiar with.

If you had spent as much time with linux as you have with windows, you'd be saying windows was obtuse.

Perhaps you could give examples?

I finally took the plunge this past weekend and installed Ubuntu on my laptop! Runs very nicely and this is the first Linux version where everything works out of the box. I like that I could first test the "Live CD" version before I did the install. Now comes the learning curve getting other apps and hardware working (although I don't know what else I'm gonna need... it has pretty much everything I need!)

It even recognises my wireless network, which I did not expect.

All I can say is... give it a shot... you just might be pleasantly surprised!

And that clinches it for me... I have no need of Vista... I don't play games anymore... just surf the internet and use Stumbleupon.... so I don't need Vista for anything! ;)

its runs like xp, i dont understand all this kuk you guys talking about vista

maybe i have not had the same problems because i waited till all the issues where sorted out

vista is much better than xp :), things actually run really fast

i suppose if you install vista on an entry level pc there might be problems though

Since most of my games wouldn't run under Vista anyway.....

I see no need to add overhead.

The whole which OS is the best thing is getting kinda old now. Get what you need and what works for you. End of story. Take me for example:

Vista:

Been using it since March. Was utter crap for like a week or so before the updates sorted out a lot of problems. Six months now and the only issue I had was to re-install after my mobo bombed out, got the exact same mobo but I still had to phone M$ to get a new activation key. Irritating.

Also I can't play Lego Starwars on it.......... life almost wasn't worth living. :( :p

Linux:

Linux will not be a option for me since I can't play BattleField2 online with it. Did everyone notice the bolded online? Good. I wouldn't everyone jumping down my throat screaming that you can play it on Linux. :p While it does work on Linux, PunkBuster doesn't. No PB means no online play. Is this Linux's fault? No. The fault lies with the creators of PB. Either they don't want to fix the issue or they just can't be bothered. I honestly don't know. Then again they might have sorted out this issue already since I haven't checked for a while now. If that's the case then Linux will be an option for me in the future if Vista falls flat on it's face.

Mac/OSX:

Mac for the most part has never really been used for gaming. That's starting to change recently with newer games being released for PC and Mac. That's all good and well but I don't feel like spending a lot of money on a complete system just so that I can have a Mac.

Yeah, that no bf2 online is sucky... the sole reason I have a windows partition. Though I do everything else in linux. I am just sick and tired of NTFS and how the windows system degrades over time.

Now I just use windows for games, and it still gets formatted every several months for performance. I have not had to format my linux drive once in that time.

I hear you, and i do agree with you!. Yes, been on PC's since DOS 3 days. Played with Mac's a few times, PC's just worked better for me!.

If I was going to make a genuine effort to get to know Kubuntu, I firstly need to get to know the file formats and what they do, get to know the Directory structure, and get to understand the basics of the OS. And most of all, get my monitors configured correctly with Kubuntu.

Perhaps you could give examples?

Sofar, I have not been able to setup my multimonitor at all, it just won't budge. I got as far as searching online for the problem, and it would seem there are scripts and all sorts i have to install to get it all to work! I just don't have time to play with scripts!...

... I lost interest because i have no flippin clue how the filesystem works with Kubuntu etc.

I tried several times again and still no luck with the multimonitor or getting to understand the file system. Found some website dedicated to Linux etc and the help they offered was no help at all!... Could not find options they were talking about, and those that i did find didnt work because kubuntu didnt allow me to apply settings or change them!.

I somehow managed to get Firefox installed (was such a mission!), but then trying to find it again later to use was a nightmare!

Wanted to start installing apps etc to try get used to kubuntu but again, installing apps and finding them was torture!

I wasted about 3 weeks playing with it and eventually formatted the drive, needed the space. Was just not worth all the frustration.

Guys, just to make something clear, I'm not dissing your OS of choice, I woud love to get to know Linux as long as i can get understand the basics, which seems to be a hard thing to find out!

Give it time. When all the games start coming out in DX10 / DX10.1 and Nvidia learn how to write proper drivers for their hardware, Vista is going to leave XP for dead. SP1 should also make quite a difference.

LabAnimal, have you tried posting your xorg.conf file on ubuntuforums.org and asking assistance?

Dont know how you could struggle with installing firefox.. you goto add/remove programs, select firefox and click on apply changes... um... might I point you in the direction of the ubuntu handbook so you can understand the basics?

I think he was using dapper or an earlier version, so I was talking from the perspective, but you are right, the new version comes with it by default.
